A late penalty from Anthony Wordsworth helped Colchester United secure a 1-1 draw against Crawley Town tonight, in front of the lowest-ever league crowd at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Just 2,484 saw the U's end their run of three successive defeats, after Wordsworth scored from the spot with four minutes to go.

He converted his first goal of the season, after Marcus Bean had been fouled in the area.

The U's had fallen behind in controversial circumstances with 19 minutes to go when Crawley's Kyle McFadzean appeared to handle the ball in the six-yard box prior to bundling the ball past keeper Mark Cousins.

The draw means Colchester have failed to win any of their opening seven matches in League One this season.

Lowest crowd of just over 2,400. Shocking and we still have clueless Ward. Obviously people bored of the football they see at WHCS. And I don't blame them with a boring game displayed today, where we once again lacked in the attacking aspect. 442 is the formation we all want seen, and he changed to this later in the 2nd half. O'Toole and Sears should have started for Izzet and Henderson as them 2 add to the boringness displayed. Rose and Wilson were dreadful throughout the game and were exploited and 2nd best all night. I couldn't remember a time where Rose had a pass on target tonight, but OBVIOUSLY he'll play ahead of White as we have clueless Ward as manager.

Leave now Ward, as we are becoming a laughing stock, attendances have drastically fallen, and you have only won one game in 21 (shocking)

What more can you say? Another dire, lacklustre performance from an unmotivated team of 11 players. I , like many others on this website, have virtually given up now of asking for the head of Mr Ward. In fact, having been a loyal U's fan for over 45 years, I am seriously beginning to have grave doubts that my beloved U's are actually going in the direction that we all want them to, since Mr Cowling has taken over. Yes, it is nice to have a nice new stadium, but just over a quarter full? Surely that tells you something is wrong! How long will it be before the crowd diminishes below 2,000? Continue performing as we are and probably by the end of the year there will be more stewards and 'official staff' in the ground than fans! It is laughable. It is embarrassing. I used to be very proud to support my local team, win or lose, but I am seriously saddened by the lack of ambition and enthusiasm shown by the board. Up the U's!!

I think the current situation is less entertaining than the bleak time under Crisp, I was one of those 1200 or so members who stood on the deserted terraces every week back in the late 80's. With Roger Brown (RIP) in charge at least you never knew what would happen next, remember the circle free kick routine nobody knew what was going on including our players!
