Ward - I can turn U's fortunes around
9:27am Monday 10th September 2012 in Sport By Jonathan Waldron
Despair - Colchester United concede a late goal to lose 1-0 at Brentford on Saturday. Picture: WARREN PAGE
John Ward has insisted he can turn Colchester United ’s fortunes around after their poor start to the season.
The U’s dropped into the League One relegation zone, following their 1-0 defeat at Brentford.
Colchester are yet to taste victory this season after five matches and have made their worst start to a league season since 1996.
But despite their disappointing results, Ward is adamant that the U’s will rediscover their form.
He said: “I have reasonable confidence in myself – I’ve been a manager for quite a long time.
“You have to have faith in football - once that leaves me, I’ll go somewhere else and do another job and not in football.
“It’s great when you’re winning because everybody wants to pat you on the back.
“It’s not so good when you’re not winning but I’m confident in what I’m trying to do with this group of players.
“After games like the one at Brentford you have to keep your strength, if that’s the right term.
“I think we’re doing a lot of things right.
“We’re not getting the results that we want but if we start throwing toys out of the pram and do things totally differently, the players will look at me differently.
“We have to make sure that when we come into training today that my spirits are up and that is relayed to the players."
See Monday's Gazette for more on this story and all of the latest Colchester United news, including a full match report, pictures and more reaction to U's defeat at Brentford.

What are you on about JW?
Players will look at you differently... who cares. To be honest if anything the players might look at you with a grin on their face and be surprised.
Please leave Ward. You have lost your support from the fans.

I thought with the signings of Sears, Morrison, Massey and Bean that there was reason for optimism in the forthcoming campaign. Sadly I'm wrong. Like others have said on other threads, I'll reserve my final conclusion till after the next two home game. If we don't win even one of them, then it's time for Cowling to act.
Robbie can't ignore an appalling run like this for too long, it simply is relegation form, which is bloody depressing given we're only 6 games into the season.

We tied in a visit to RHS Wisley Friday, stayed at my daughters in Teddington over the weekend and went to Brentford on Saturday, the boys toiled hard in the hot weather but they were never going to win, especially when Brentford had used all 3 subs and we only brought on Clinton Morrison because Wordsworth went off on a stretcher.

It is all very good sacking someone, but with out a plan in place, what can you gain????
Wards football might be boring to some, but nobody knows if sacking him will pick up more points than keeping him would. No one can be sure of this, therefore I am sure Cowling is contemplating all scenarios as we speak.
Cowling must be sure we will get relegated with Ward as manager before we throw money at sacking Ward and paying out for a new manager and a new managers signings because after all, the new manager might never want to play Morrison and Sears for example.
And most of you lot on here don't in my opinion (and probably in the opinion of anyone significant at the club) have any real bearing on the majority of Colchester United fans.
I say this because can any of you clan negative members honestly say that you would back Ward should we get 9 points out of our next 4 games???? If the answer is no, then no matter how poor Ward may appear, your opinion is based on personal reasons and NOT football reasons. You would have your claws out for him regardless of results.
And that sir is Bullying.

I think most of the comment here is based on the appalling statistics and contributors have every right to feel that it is time for change after one win in 19. I would love to see us pick up nine points in the next four games but it will not disguise the fact that Wards brand of football is dull, uninspiring and susceptible to exactly the kind of poor run that we are in. By contrast, I seem to recall that when Cyril Lee was manager, we scored about 100 goals in a season and leaked about the same number. I couldn't wait for the next game! We probably only ended up in mid table but boy was it great entertainment. I respect your blue and white blood SW but you must respect other peoples views too which I am afraid have significant credibility.
I have said it before and seeing as though all of you appear like broken records, I might as well say my opinion again........

I am not pro Ward. I don't know how many times I have to say this. If Ward was sacked tomorrow, I would not be surprised nor bothered to be honest.
I want what is best for the club, and that is all I want. I don't know better than you, Mr Honest, Cowling or Ward. I don't know if sacking him or keeping him is the best option. I have an unbiased opinion that we should keep him for now.
I get sick and tired of too many people who actually think that they know better than Ward himself. That is rediculous.
To me the real problem at the core of this club is the negative vibes that surround the town, and this website and its members is testament to this. To me the problem does not lay in getting back the 2,000 dye hard fans that cannot be bothered with Ward as suggested on here, but getting 150,000 people who live in Colchester to hang a Col U badge in there car or buy there grandchildren the new kit rather than Arsenals. Lets face it, the kid ain't going to the Emirates either.
So before anyone judges me as being John Ward or anyone else, please read above and see that I believe there is a real problem within our football community, and that is that not enough people really care about Colchester United in the first place.

Mr Cowling started off on the right track, with the right intentions but then got let down badly by Lambert leaving. If Lambert had stayed on, then we could well now have been a very succesfull Championship club instead of where we are now, and every one of us would be happy.Instead the club now finds itself with no assets of any good players to sell on for decent fees, which has now forced the decline in the standard of players we now retain at the club. You mention in your blog that Lambert and Boothroyd only take jobs where they can spend. This was certainly not the case with Boothroyd as both Coventry and Northampton are in much the same boat as ourselves. What Boothroyd did do for Coventry was sign Richard Keogh for peanuts ,and who then recently moved on and signed for Derby for a cool one and a half million quid. However back to Lambert. When he left Norwich this is what their Club statement read. When Paul joined us in August 2009 we were on the brink of financial meltdown. Today we are a Barclays League club on a financially sound footing with a staduim to full capacity. We are highly indebted to Paul for all the success we have achieved. David MC Nally Norwich Chief C.O. So by signing players like Holt for £400,000 and was valued recently at six million is not bad business in my books. Getting rid of John Ward will still not solve all the problems to me, because if you want to attract a good young hungry manager to the club instead he will need certain funds to improve the squad which only one person can help in and thats Mr Cowling. I have mentioned before players like Izzet,Heath and Dugie should never been retained, and instead a good experienced creative midfielder in place would have been more benificial. I might surprise a few people but on Saturday the lads will need all the encouragement going and not the Ward out shouts. The best way to do that is send your displeasure by email or letter to the club. Its not nice being in the position we are, so lets get behind the lads on Saturday.

U'sforever wrote: John Wards forty odd years in football has landed him in a comfortable position at Colchester united f.c. A manager happy in his comfort zone to see him into retirement and a chairman who is pleased to finish mid table is bad news for every U’s fan. They say we are punching above our weight, well I wonder if clubs like Stevenage, Crawley are saying the same, I bet not, they are more progressive in their aim to punch even higher. I say raise the punch bag mister chairman and start hitting higher. Mr Ward must go and soon, we have been going backwards since he took over as manager.Well I agree with some of this. Yes Mr Ward will retire after this job no doubt. But he was the ideal candidate to nurse us through a time when no money was available to sign players. Lamberts, Boothroyds and Blackwells only take jobs where they can spend££££. Oh and for every Stevenage or Crawley there is twice as many Bradfords, Northamptons, Oldhams, Tranmeres, Luton, Cambridge, MAcclesfield etc etc etc. Remember that we did a stevenage and did the unthinkable. More than once too.
Your suggestion of emailing the club with my displeasure was previously returned with the attitude of "If you don't like it you know what you can do". Now that approx 2.000 have done that the club seems to be worried. They can't have it all their own way.
I've only been coming to the games in the past five years and travel from Basildon as often as I can. The first year I came was at Layer Road when we got relegated from the Championship. What made me fall in love with the club was that they were prepared to go down fighting to the bitter end. I can accept losing but only if the team is trying their hardest. Sadly I've not seen much of that in the past 18 months. Most of this is down to a manage who has very poor tactics and no motivational skills. JW might be the nicest guy in the world and I won't dispute that, but unfortunately he's clearly not doing a good job.
I don't like to see anybody sacked but the stats under JW just haven't been good enough.

super waluigi wrote:Oh my... Super are you Ward/Cowling in disguise?? I remember I asked you before a while back and you didn't answer. You'll probably shout abuse at me now.
I have said it before and seeing as though all of you appear like broken records, I might as well say my opinion again........
Ward has had his chance, and yeah sack him and buy a new manager in... That's the game. I'm sure there are managers they will play much better football then the bore we currently see.
And Super it's a large majority of the fans that think this. Its just you and Ward that think otherwise. Coincidence
They don't promote and do anything for the community. Plus their badges and kits are the same price as Arsenals lol.

Well said Super waluigi....I've not put out a commemt lately, only because I think this Col u Forum has become contaminated. This used to be a site for Colchester United supporters..
Forget about the manager, forget about the players, Managers and players come and go, But It's the Club and It's survival that is important to the real fans.
'Yes' manager Ward and his players are having a horrendous start to this season, and 'Yes' things urgently need to get better.
The constant cut and paste comments from the usual quarter, is frankly getting quite boring, and does nothing to 'gee up' our players and management.
On the plus side, There is an hardcore of about 3,000 real fans who are the silent majority..
Up the U's..
I take it nora is one of those silent supporters in the East stand that don't chant. Thats if nora actually watches the football real fans do.
The fans that express their views, chant in the games are the real fans. I like everyone else on here is entited to my own opinions and sharing them, after all the fans pay the players and the managers wages so we want to see the money well spent at the moment it isn't.

Though I dont agree with Wards tactics I will still be giving my 100% support to the team. Personally I think we have to give J.W. twelve games to sort things out. If by then things have not improved then I think a change shoud be made.
Crazy, if you remember correctly, the football under both Lambert and Boothroyd was bloody awful. Indeed as it is now. Where Narrwich found their new found wealth from I'll never no. Still can't believe we got compensation from Boothroyd going to Coventry. That money and all the money from Naarwich for fines and player transfers. Robbie then says...no money for new players. Still he did waste a few thousand a week on a certain player for an ego trip.

Robbie C has made it clear over time that he knows his own mind and no amount of chanting is going to make him change it. If attendances fall as result then he will have to deal with those consequences.
John Ward is making some odd team / tactic choices for me - John White was clearly outstanding last season and should be back in starting 11 asap. Move Matt Rose up to left midfield where he was much better last season. Why no subs were used at Brentford I cannot even begin to understand?! His statement about having "reasonable confidence" in himself is the most troubling part in this for me. If he does not have "full confidence" in himself to improve the teams fortunes then who the hell else will?
If the decision were made to release him, then who do we get in as a replacement? A manager with a reputation is something we cannot afford and we have no transfer kitty to offer. If we get in a young unknown who does well, we will get dropped like a hot potato when a "better" offer appears i.e. Phil P. / Paul L. / and to a certain extent Aidy B.
The long and short of it is that Col U is just too small a club to attract any loyalty from managers, players and fans (excluding the core 4,000) so we are between a rock and a hard place. The only way to change it is to create some success and keep hold of the people that brought it about which Col U has never been able to do. The current Chairman I believe will be part of that with his vision including the new training ground but it is going to take a long time.

I'm thinking of Kinsella, Wilkins or Paul Buckle (experienced as well). it doesn't need to be a big name.
It's not the 5 league games this season that bothers me on their own but the last 14 from last season.

I seldom agree with wellnow but I agree with him about the Paralympic athletes. While CUFC were playing (and in the end losing) in the sun at Brentford, with all the subs being kept on the bench as usual, I was in the Olympic Park prior to seeing the final evening of competition in the stadium, Oscar Pistorius winning his gold medal, and a lot of other great performances, especially by a Polish high jumper, all accompanied by thousands of waving Union Jacks because we were there to see the athletes of whichever country who had trained for years to appear on the big stage. A fortnight of magic for the Olympics, another fortnight of magic for the Paralympics. And now we wake up from the dream, and we are back on earth with CUFC struggling to stay clear of the relegation zone. Why bother? But when (if) I see that John White is back in the team, I'll start coming along. I just hope Ward makes some changes before we get to 10 points adrift at the bottom of the table.
You got one detail wrong on another post though, where you said that Paul Lambert signed Grant Holt for Norwich City. But he didn't, for Holt was in the Norwich team that Lambert's Col U thrashed 7-1 on that famous day at Carrow Road in August 2009. Lambert then joined them a few days later.
Paul Lambert obviously has many good qualities, to be so successful. But at Col U he was deficient as a man-manager. He got rid of the excellent Johnnie Jackson just a few days before leaving us. And he had no time for John White, sending him off on loan to Southend. It was Aidy Hoofroyd who brought him back and played him in pretty well every game.

Aspiration is a virtue; the club should never settle for mediocrity or stray from an upwardly mobile agenda. Colchester United with its excellent training facilities is an attractive proposition, for many a young ambitious manager. McDonough, Wignall, and Parkinson delivered promotions on shoestring budgets a far cry from the embarrassment of riches John Ward still has at his disposal.
So many of these posts astound me; nobody is more disapointed than me about the start to the season and indeed how we have gone backwards over the last 3 years but we should all remember that without RC and his financial input in recent years we would not be in business for one thing. Secondly we are a small club, always have been and always will be. Colchester is not a hot bed of football, we punched above our weight for a few years and now we are back to reality. Yes we can sack JW but where will that get us, we won't attract big name to replace him, we are a small club. Just look round football - how often does a knee jerk sacking work? Lets face it people were calling for Parky to go 6 games into that amazing season. Neither RC or JW want to fail and to be frank if I was RC right now and reading this drivel I would say "thats it had enough, I don't need this" and pull out. Then just where would we be?
