Colchester United have made their first new signing of the summer after snapping up long-term target Harry Pell from League Two rivals Cheltenham Town.

The Tilbury-born midfielder, who has agreed a three-year contract with the U's, had signed for an undisclosed fee.

Colchester have been long-time admirers of Pell, who was born in Essex and still had another year remaining on his current contract at Whaddon Road.

The 6ft 4in midfielder has made more than 300 career appearances and was part of the Cheltenham side that won promotion from the National League to League Two in 2015/16.

Pell began his career at Charlton Athletic and spent 11 years with the Addicks before moving to Bristol Rovers in 2010.

He also spent time on loan with Hereford United, whom he joined permanently at the end of the 2010/11 season.

The 26-year-old spent two years with the Bulls, playing 53 times before joining AFC Wimbledon for an undisclosed fee.

He played more than 50 times for the Dons before switching to Cheltenham, in 2015.

Pell made 41 appearances for the Robins this season and scored six goals.

Colchester needed to make midfield reinforcements, following the departures of Doug Loft, Craig Slater and Tommy O'Sullivan this week along with winger Drey Wright.
