Colchester United head coach John McGreal felt his side's performance against Swindon Town merited more than a 0-0 draw this afternoon.

Chances were at a premium for both sides at the final game of the season at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, as the game finished in a stalemate.

McGreal said: “We went out at home with a draw but I thought we thoroughly deserved to win.

“Had it been a boxing match, it would have been over and I’m pleased with how we applied ourselves.

“We been stressing all week not to go out with a whimper in front of our fans.

“We wanted to keep putting a show on for our fans and keep doing things the right way and that’s all I can ask for.

“I thought that we created chances – they weren’t so much clearcut opportunities maybe but we got the ball in and around the six-yard box.

“They had a little spell for ten to 15 minutes in the second half but I thought after that, that we dominated the play.

“I thought Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe and Ryan Gondoh were terrific when they came on and Sammie Szmodics brought an injection, when he came on.

“This is what we are and I’m sure Ryan will get a few bums off seats.

“Big Dillon Barnes did well on his league debut and deserved his clean sheet, too.”

McGreal handed a first-ever EFL start to goalkeeper Dillon Barnes and the U's boss was pleased with the youngster's display in helping his side keep a clean sheet.

"We think highly of Dillon," said McGreal.

"We've had to monitor his development over the season and he's had a couple of loans out to non-league and men's football.

"I think today, you could see what he brings.

"He's a big, confident boy and he distributes the ball really, really well.

"We're hoping that he works hard in training and we'll see what the summer brings, because he could be in and around it."

Attacker Ryan Gondoh came on for his Colchester debut as a substitute in the second half and boss McGreal felt he looked lively.

“We’ve been keeping an eye on him and he’s been performing particularly well, of late for the under-23s," added McGreal.

“When opportunity comes, it’s about taking it and we know what he’s got.

“He’s a tough boy, not only in taking a tackle but also in taking the ball as well.

“That’s what we want – we want players to take the game and we can’t have asked any more."
