Kane Vincent-Young insists he will not allow any contract talk to distract him between now and the end of the season.

The talented wing-back is one of more than a dozen first-team players at Colchester United who will see their deals expire, this summer.

Vincent-Young, who first joined the U’s in 2014 after leaving Tottenham Hotspur’s academy, is among that group but he has stressed all he is thinking about is helping his side finish as high as they can in League Two – starting with Stevenage tomorrow.

Vincent-Young said: “There are still loads of games to go and if you think about something like that now, it can become a bit of a distraction.

“I’m in a good place and I want to continue staying there and I’m just focusing on the games and in training.”

Vincent-Young has been a regular for Colchester this season, playing the majority of his games at left wing-back.

Only five outfield players have racked up more matches for the U’s in League Two in the current campaign and the 22-year-old says playing regularly has helped him progress as a footballer.

“It’s great going out knowing that I’ve played a lot of games this season,” said Vincent-Young, who has played more games in the current campaign than any other in his professional career.

“I’ve really enjoyed it – it’s been really beneficial for me.

“I think I’ve become a better player this season, without a doubt.

“Playing games provide such invaluable experience and training too, so I’m really happy with the progression that I’ve made.

“You learn how to deal with different situations the more you play in one position.

“I haven’t played loads of games there but it’s definitely a case of the more you play, the better you get.”

Vincent-Young has worked in tandem this season with Ryan Jackson, who has been a regular for Colchester in the right wing-back role.

The U’s youngster says he has gained a lot from working with the former Gillingham defender, who has nearly 300 career appearances under his belt.

He said: “We’ve got Jacko on the right and we know what he’s about.

“But when he was unavailable last Saturday, Drey came in on the left and did really well and that’s the adaptability that we have.

“Jacko has been really good for me this season, since day one.

“We were fighting for the same position but from the time he came, we got on really well.

“He’s played a lot of games and he’s someone who I can learn from – he gives me advice and it works really well.”

Colchester head to Stevenage tomorrow looking to secure their first League Two win in six matches.

The U’s, who lie nine points off the play-off positions with eight games remaining, have managed just one goal in more than seven and a half hours of football and have struggled to find the net, of late.

Vincent-Young said: “It’s a matter of us taking our chances and I’m sure that win is just around the corner.

“Once we get a couple, I’m sure they’ll flood in.

“Getting the win has proved tough lately but I don’t think the performances have been too bad.

“We’re optimistic going into the game, knowing that we can get the three points.

“We’ve been solid defensively over the last few games but set-pieces have killed us.

“You have to take it game by game and you can’t look too far ahead.

“We just have to focus on ourselves and we can’t control what the teams above us are doing.

“As professionals, we still have the responsibility and the duty to go out there and play every game as normal, no matter where you are in the table.”
