Matt Briggs insists he has no regrets about his time at Colchester United after being released by the club.

The 26-year-old was due to see his contract expire this summer and has not been offered a new deal by the U’s.

Left-sided player Briggs experienced his fair share of ups and downs at the Weston Homes Community Stadium and was part of the squad that were relegated to League Two, last season.

But the former Fulham youngster, who played made 65 league and cup appearances for Colchester after joining them in January 2015 initially on loan, says he enjoyed his time at the club.

Briggs told the Daily Gazette: “I’ve got no regrets about my time at Colchester.

“I enjoyed my football there and managed to make more than 60 appearances for them, during my time there.

“It’s something that I felt would be on the cards and the club gave me their reasons.

“I enjoyed my time at Colchester and I wish them all the best for the future but now I’m looking forward to a new challenge somewhere else.

“I initially came to Colchester on loan to get games and I did well enough to earn a permanent contract and get more matches under my belt.

“It was frustrating before I came to Colchester because I wasn’t playing regularly but I managed to get that there, playing mostly in League One.

“We were unfortunate to get relegated last season and I’ve experienced playing at both ends of the table.

“I’ve now played in every division in English football!

“It’s good to go into the summer knowing even more that I can play in a number of positions.

“I played about 11 games towards the end of the season as part of a three at the back in a 3-5-2 formation and even though it’s not my strongest position, I enjoyed playing there.

“To be fair to Brennan (Dickenson), he’s had a great season at left wing-back and contributed to a lot of goals and assists but after he unfortunately got injured, I was able to finish the season in that position.”

Briggs admits the hip surgery he underwent last summer hindered his progress, this season.

“The injury I had has held me back this season and it was quite frustrating, seeing specialists, having the operation and then still having problems after that,” said the former Millwall defender.

“Thankfully, the sugar injections I had helped me get back on track and fortunately, I was able to finish the season in the side.”

Briggs says he is yet to finalise his next move in football, following his departure from Colchester.

“I have no inkling yet as to where I’ll be next – I’m just going to enjoy a bit of a break now with my family,” added the Guyana international.

“I still think I can play at League One level or above but I’ll consider the options I have.

“I wouldn’t rule out playing abroad – it’s something that interests me and it might be a good opportunity to do that.”
