On their own turf, Colchester United have shown they are a match for any team in League Two.

They proved that once again by pushing champions-elect Doncaster Rovers all the way, on Good Friday.

But at Morecambe this afternoon, it is essential that the U’s demonstrate in their penultimate scheduled away game of the season that they can also replicate that impressive form on their travels.

While their last two performances against Doncaster and Stevenage at the Weston Homes Community Stadium were undoubtedly impressive, there is a danger that that good work might be undermined with a disappointing result against the Shrimps, who realistically now have little to play for other than pride.

Only crisis club Leyton Orient have lost more games than Morecambe over the course of the campaign.

Indeed, Jim Bentley’s side have also got the second worst home record in the division behind bottom club Orient, who the U’s play in their final away game of the season on Saturday week.

This is as good a time as any for Colchester to notch up their first away win of 2017, just when it matters most.

A victory today would do wonders for their hopes of making the play-offs, with four games remaining.

Three vital points could mean they finish the day in the top-seven ahead of their final three scheduled games, if other results go in their favour.

There is no reason why John McGreal’s side should not feel confident ahead of their first-ever trip to the Globe Arena, despite the stark contrast between their home and away form over recent months.

Colchester go into the match having tasted defeat just once in four matches and now appear to have once again hit upon a settled side.

It is something they have craved throughout the season, in light of all of the injury problems they have experienced.

It was difficult to pick a U’s man of the match against Doncaster, such was the competence of their team performance.

A similarly committed display at Morecambe today would give them an excellent chance of securing a precious victory.
