Brennan Dickenson says Colchester United will be aiming to reproduce their winning form when they host Cheltenham Town this afternoon.

But the attacking wing-back insists there will be no thoughts of their pivotal victory against the Robins, which kick-started their impressive upturn in form.

Colchester’s six-match unbeaten run started with a convincing 3-0 triumph at Whaddon Road in November, a result that ended a ten-match winless run in League Two.

Dickenson scored in that victory but insists their focus will solely be on the here and now, as the U’s play their opening game of 2017 at the Weston Homes Community Stadium today.

Dickenson said: “We’re at home against Cheltenham and we’ll be looking to put on another performance like the last six and get that win.

“The spark started at Cheltenham but we have to put that to the back of our minds - it’s another game and we’ll be mentally prepared for it like any other.

“We believe we can get our bodies into the right shape in the short space of time we have and it’s more mental than anything else and we’re a very mentally-strong group.”

Colchester go into the Cheltenham game just off two points off the play-off places and Dickenson says it is a happy U’s changing room.

“It’s very exciting playing in this team at the moment – we’re winning games and putting in good performances,” said the former Gillingham man, whose six goals for Colchester this season have all come in winning performances.

“We believe in ourselves as a young group and we’re aiming for these kind of performances week in, week out.

“That’s the goal for 2017, getting into those play-off spots.

“We were near the bottom of the table but we don’t think about that too much – that’s in the past and we’ve come out fighting.

“The belief among everyone, from the players to the staff to the chairman, has been excellent and I think that’s why we’ve come out on top and been on this run.”

Dickenson was one of four different Colchester goalscorers in their 4-2 success at Stevenage on Saturday, taking his tally for the season to six.

The 23-year-old has hit the net six times this season and is joint second-leading goalscorer with Kurtis Guthrie and one behind top marksman, Chris Porter.

“It’s always good to have different goalscorers and to spread goals around the team,” added Dickenson.

“Chris Porter’s going into the New Year as our leading goalscorer but there is competition.

“The aim is to get as many goals as possible but we’ll see how it goes.”
