Colchester United have received more bad news on the injury front after their two leading scorers suffered fresh setbacks.

Sammie Szmodics is due to undergo a scan on a foot injury on Friday, after he missed the U's 2-1 defeat at Yeovil Town at the weekend.

And leading goalscorer Chris Porter suffered a fresh hamstring problem on the morning of the Yeovil game which is likely to keep him out of tomorrow night's crucial trip to play fellow League Two strugglers Cheltenham Town.

U's head coach John McGreal revealed Szmodics' problem is a fresh injury and not linked to the foot injury that required an operation and sidelined the attacker for several months, last season.

McGreal said: “It’s a different problem to the one that he had before.

“He’s said he’s been carrying it for a while and in training through the week, he pulled up and said it wasn’t feeling right.

“(U's head physio) Tony Flynn has arranged the scan for Friday so we’ll wait for the results on that."

Meanwhile, Porter is still struggling with a hamstring injury and has missed Colchester's last four games.

McGreal added: “Chris Porter would have featured but he went down in training on the morning of the (Yeovil) match with his hamstring."

The news adds to McGreal's injury woes, with Colchester currently missing a host of other players.

Lewis Kinsella, Lloyd Doyley, Doug Loft and Matt Briggs all remain sidelined.

But midfielder Owen Garvan is likely to continue his comeback in Professional Development League Two tonight when Colchester's under-23s take on Millwall at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, kick-off 7pm.

Garvan, who is yet to feature for Colchester's first team this season, played an hour for Wayne Brown's side last week in their 5-0 home defeat against Bristol City.
