JOHN McGreal is adamant that he has no intention of “giving up” his role as Colchester United’s head coach.

And the U’s boss says he has received “fantastic” support from chairman Robbie Cowling, in the midst of the club’s winless run in League Two.

Colchester head to Yeovil Town tomorrow desperate for a victory, having gone nine league matches without a win.

McGreal made an impressive start as U’s boss and was nominated for the Manager of the Month award for August but he admits his side’s recent run has been tough.

Nevertheless, he insists he is determined to keep working hard to turn his team’s fortunes around and guide them up the table.

McGreal said: “I’m learning this job as I go along and it’s an unbelievable opportunity, which I grabbed with both hands.

“I’m certainly not going to give it up. I’ve worked ever so hard to get into this position and I’m going to keep trying.

“I’m going to stay positive and driving the boys on.

“There were times when we were winning, scoring goals in abundance and had all our fit players earlier in the season when you think ‘this is great – I’ve cracked it’.

“Now you look at it and it’s tough but I’m still enjoying it and I’ve got to keep believing.

“It’s a great learning curve and you find out your true players.

“We lost players in the summer and then we’ve had injuries, but I’m not making excuses.

“We’ll get back to where we were. It’s only a matter of time and I keep feeding that into my players.

U’s chairman Cowling came under fire from some fans following their 3-0 home defeat against Leyton Orient.

But McGreal said: “Robbie has been fantastic.

“There’s no better person, as a chairman, and he has lots of words of wisdom.

“He’s been here before, in years gone by and I’ve also got Stevie Ball, who’s a great number two.

“I truly understood the fans’ frustrations last Saturday.

“It’s hard, especially when you’ve got your family and kids in the stands and they can hear what’s going on but I’ve got a thick skin. I’ve been in the game for 18 years.

“However, I’ve also got my beliefs and a philosophy and I’ve got a team that I truly, truly believe in.

“We are where we are and we need to get ourselves out of it - no-one else is going to do that for us.”
