Kevin Keen said he was "very worried" for his defender Alex Wynter following his sickening clash of heads in the opening minutes of Colchester United's 4-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup fourth round.

Wynter was stretchered off and taken to hospital with concussion after he clashed heads with team-mate Tom Eastman in the first two minutes of the U's game against Spurs at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Wynter will undergo a scan in hospital and may have to stay in overnight.

U's boss Keen said: “I was very worried for Alex – and I still am.

“Alex is up and aware of what’s going on.

“When he was here, he didn’t have a clue what was going on and he was knocked out cold.

“The physio (Tony Flynn) is going straight up and I’ll speak to him as soon as possible."

Keen revealed that Colchester were in the process of offering Wynter a new deal, prior to the game.

“We were in the process of offering Alex a new contract," he said.

Keen said he was proud of his Colchester players in the aftermath of their defeat against Spurs.

Ben Davies' own goal late on proved their consolation, after Nacer Chadli scored twice and Eric Dier and Tom Carroll also netted to send Tottenham into the fifth round.

Colchester were forced to play several minutes with only ten men early on following the clash of heads between Wynter and Eastman and had to play full-back Matt Briggs at centre-back.

Keen added; “I was disappointed (with the early injuries) because you work hard and set yourselves up and Alex and Tom have been two of my best players, since I’ve been here.

“To lose the two of them was disappointing.

“But I have nothing but pride; we played I don’t know how long with only ten men and Alex Gilbey at centre-back.

“As soon as Frankie (Kent) and (Matt) Briggs came on we gave it a real go but Tottenham are a top team and it was a tough day."
