Alex Gilbey admits Colchester United’s relegation battle with Fleetwood Town tonight is a “huge” game for the club.

The U’s head into their crucial home clash lying five points adrift of safety in League One – and their opponents – having not won in the league since October.

Colchester are yet to record a league win under boss Kevin Keen but were unlucky to lose against Sheffield United, last weekend.

The U’s were in impressive in the second half of their 2-1 defeat against the Blades and midfielder Gilbey says if they reproduce the same form throughout the whole of their vital clash with Fleetwood, they can secure a valuable victory.

Gilbey said: “It’s a huge game for us and we need to get maximum points.

“If we play like we did in the second half (against Sheffield United) then we’ll steam-roller Fleetwood.

“Everyone knows now that whoever we’re playing, we need to pick points up.

“Even if we go two or three goals behind, we just have to keep going for it.”

Gilbey is the latest player to sing the praises of boss Keen, who took over as U’s manager nearly a month ago.

“The gaffer couldn’t do any more for us at the minute and every day on and off the training pitch, he’s been outstanding,” said the former Gilberd School pupil.

“All of the boys love working with him and I think it’s time to start picking up points.

“Before the gaffer came in, all of the boys were low in confidence including myself – even the staff were.

“The new manager has come in and has given the boys a good kick and made everyone confident.

“We’ve gone back to basics with a nice solid shape and I think that’s shown.”
