SAM Walker felt Tony Humes’ decision to step down as Colchester United manager showed “the measure of the man”.

The U’s goalkeeper said it was a tough day at the club’s Florence Park training ground as players were told of their boss’ decision to leave following his team’s run of poor form in League One.

But Walker felt the manner of Humes’ exit showed what type of man he was.

“He is one of the most genuine men I have met in football,” said Walker.

“He’s a lovely guy and so easy to approach, but it’s a measure of the man that he left when he did.

“A lot of people would have sat in the job until they were pushed and picked up whatever compensation they could. It’s a measure of the man that he felt he was not having a positive influence on the side and felt it was time to move on.

“It’s never a nice day when something like that happens, but I really do wish him well.”

However, Walker said there was no time for sentiment as the players had to quickly turn their attention to their visit to Burton Albion tomorrow.

He added: “We had a meeting and we were told that we needed to focus on Burton.

“Most players nowadays will have seen something similar with manager comings and goings, so we are used to it.

“It’s not a nice experience, but we have to get on with it.

“Richard Hall, John McGreal and Wayne Brown will be charge and they are guys we all know, so it’s business as usual really.

“In the ever-changing, fast-paced world of football, you have to be able to adapt when things like this happen.”
