George Moncur says his Colchester United team-mates have helped put him on course for his most prolific season in front of goal.

The 22-year-old midfielder is currently the U’s joint leading scorer with seven goals, following his strike in their FA Cup triumph at Wealdstone last weekend.

Moncur needs only two more goals to equal his best-ever scoring tally of nine from last season, with less than a third of the campaign gone.

Colchester have hit 33 goals in all competitions so far this season and the former West Ham youngster says their creativity is helping his goalscoring touch.

Moncur said: “It’s great to be playing in this team, when you have the players around you who can pick you out.

“It’s quality and you know that every time you’ve got the ball, you’ve got options either side.

“They can pick me out and I can pick them out, so it’s a good link-up.

“It’s always nice to score, no matter what game or what standard it is.

“It was my seventh of the season (against Wealdstone) and I’m already not far off from my tally of last year.

“That’s great on a personal note and I just want to keep doing it and keep impressing people.”

Moncur has been a near ever-present in a more advanced midfield role for Colchester this season, playing just behind their main forward.

“It’s great playing in that higher role, going forward and getting chances in every game,” said Moncur, who joined the U’s in August 2014, initially on loan.

“I try and get on the ball as much as I can but credit to the manager and Richard (Hall) because they want me to play higher.

“I did it towards the end of last season and they want me to push on, because they know that I have good ability in the final third.

“It’s about me changing my game and being more versatile to positions.

“Hopefully, I can get more goals and get a few more points for the team.”

Meanwhile, Moncur feels Colchester’s emphatic FA Cup win over Wealdstone has given them a lift ahead of their home clash with Coventry City, this weekend.

He added: “Whenever you win, it’s always a good confidence boost. Hopefully, we can carry it on in the league and get some wins.”
