In-form George Moncur believes Colchester United can win promotion this season if they maintain their fine form.

Moncur scored his fifth goal in five league games to help the U’s win 2-1 at Swindon Town and notch up their third successive victory in League One.

The win was particularly satisfying for Moncur, who was born in Swindon and whose father John played more than 50 league games at the County Ground.

And with the U’s three points off the play-off positions, the midfielder feels there is no reason why they can’t push for promotion, if they can keep up their excellent form on a consistent basis.

Moncur said: “If we keep playing like that and winning games, I think we’ve got a great chance of going up.

“It was our third win in a row and the performances have definitely been picking up in the last four or five games.

“The results are now showing that and everyone’s buzzing.

“The attitude has changed now among the lads in the changing room, now that we’ve got a few wins.

“Everyone seems more confident both on and off the field and things are going well.”

Moncur scored Colchester’s opener in the third minute, to maintain his fine recent scoring streak.

And although Wes Thomas equalised midway through the half, Callum Harriott’s strike just before half-time proved enough for the U’s to claim another win.

“I was born here and my dad played here, so to get a goal at Swindon means a lot and it was great to score,” said the 22-year-old.

“I’m sure my dad will see my goal on the TV and be pleased.

“I work on my shooting in training and I’m sure I’ve got the energy to get in there.

“I know chances will definitely come my way as I get into the box and hopefully, I can keep doing it.

“I want to keep working and keep getting forward and hopefully more goals will come.

“I definitely feel more confident in front of goal, this year.

“I got eight goals last year so I’m only three away from that already.

“Hopefully, I can push on and get some more.”

Moncur is hoping Colchester can maintain their impressive form, ahead of back-to-back home games against Bradford City and Bury.

He added: “If we can get between four to six points from our next two home games, we’ll be flying which we are already - we just have to keep it going.”
