Joe Edwards says he is enjoying helping Colchester United turn on the style - but only now they are winning.

Having failed to win any of their first six league fixtures, Tony Humes’ resurgent side now lie just three points off the play-off places.

The U’s are unbeaten in their last four matches in League One and ended Gillingham’s unbeaten record, last weekend.

Colchester’s upturn in form has been helped by some exciting performances and have scored ten goals in that time.

But while he admits he enjoys playing in a stylish team, midfielder Edwards insists winning matches always has to be the priority.

He said: “It can increase the enjoyment level playing in an entertaining team - but results are the most important thing.

“It’s only good to play in an entertaining team when you get results.

“If you’re winning 1-0 every week and not playing well, you’re still enjoying it.

“It’s the best of both worlds at the moment - we’re playing well and we’re winning.

“I always feel that we can score, so we need to keep that going and also be tight at the back.”

Colchester will travel to play Swindon Town this weekend in good spirits, following their recent upturn in form.

The U’s impressive win over Gillingham followed hot on the heels of a 3-2 triumph at promotion-chasing Sheffield United and a 3-3 draw with last season’s play-off semi-finalists Chesterfield.

“It was a really good seven days for us,” said Edwards, who has made nine appearances for Colchester since joining them from Yeovil Town, in July.

“There’s a lot of confidence in the group at the moment and we know we’ve got a very good, talented bunch of boys.

“If we can keep that going with results, that brings confidence.

“We’ve got three good results in the space of a week and now we can look forward to Swindon, on Saturday.

“Now’s the time to push on - we’ve had a good few weeks but we can’t look back.

“We need to keep going now and stay sharp and go to Swindon with a lot of confidence.”
