Alex Wynter says Colchester United’s players are determined to put things right against Oldham Athletic tonight.

The U’s were beaten 2-1 at Peterborough United last weekend, despite making a good start to the game at London Road.

Colchester boss Tony Humes was disappointed with the way his players failed to build on a promising start against Posh.

And defender Wynter is glad that the U’s have an immediate opportunity to bounce back, when they take on the Latics.

He said: “We’ve got another game tonight - that’s the good thing in football, you’ve always got a chance to put it right.

“We’ve got to knuckle down and work hard and hopefully we can make our home ground a fortress.

“There were positives to come out of the performance (against Peterborough), especially the first 25 minutes or so.

“And in the second half, we still created opportunities but we do need to be more clinical.

“We started really well and we were all over them, creating numerous opportunities.

“We got the goal but then we switched off and they punished us.

“We need to be more switched on when we score and perhaps we took our foot off the pedal when we scored.

“We should have maintained what we’d been doing in the first 25 minutes.

“We know where we’ve gone wrong and we have to do our best to put it right against Oldham.”

Wynter has featured at the heart of Colchester’s defence in each of their first three league and cup matches of the season.

The 21-year-old has shown his versatility during his time at the U’s, playing at centre-half, both full-back positions and also in midfield.

But Wynter’s preferred position is central defence and the former Crystal Palace defender is determined to take his chance in that position.

“Like I said last season, centre-half is a position I wanted to play in,” added Wynter, who joined Colchester on a permanent basis in January.

“I’m happy and hopefully I can take the chance that I’ve been given - I’ll just keep giving my best and that’s all I can do.”
