Tony Humes wants his Colchester United players to take confidence from last season’s wins against Peterborough United as they face a Posh side that they have struggled against at times in recent years.

The U’s head to London Road in League One today looking to emulate their 2-0 victory last season when goals from Freddie Sears and Elliott Hewitt gave them a first success there since 2005.

Colchester also beat Peterborough in the FA Cup at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, but the Posh have enjoyed victories in five of their nine meetings prior to that, including a 5-1 drubbing in the Capital One Cup two years ago.

So as they return to London Road, Humes wants his players to focus on their recent success there and feels Tuesday’s performance against Championship side Reading can be another boost to their confidence.

“We’ve found it tough when we’ve played Peterborough in recent years,” said Humes.

“They’ve always been a strong team against us and we haven’t got many results, but we got that one against them there last year so it shows that we can win there.

“They have had a lot of changes to their team and are a bit younger so we have to go there with no fear and confident that it took Reading 115 minutes to break us down on Tuesday.

“We have to take that as a good sign of the team coming together and gaining in confidence so have to go there with a positive attitude.”

Humes said he is still looking to bolster his U’s squad with new signings, but is prepared to wait for the right deals to be done.

He added: “We are still trying to think about one or two more and there’s a bit more in the budget.

“There are one or two areas where we’re a bit short and we’re looking at that.

“We won’t rush into it as there are still two weeks left of the transfer market and then there’s the loan market as well.

“There is no hurry and we have to make the sure the right ones are available.

“More players will become available in the weeks to come.”

The Colchester boss confirmed that goalkeeper Chris Lewington may still leave the U’s on loan, despite the long-term injury to Sam Walker that has left the former Dagenham shot-stopper as one of only two senior keepers now at the club.

“We were considering letting Chris Lewington leave the club, but that changes to some degree now (with Sam Walker’s injury),” said Humes.

“We made a loan an availability to Chris, but he and Elliot (Parish) are now the only two keepers at the club in and around the first team so we need Chris around.

“However, if something came up you’d have to stick to your word should that be the case.

“Nothing has happened so far and until it does we’ll stick to where we are.”
