Colchester United manager Tony Humes was impressed by the quality of the goals his side scored in their 4-0 pre-season friendly win at Brentwood Town.

Gavin Massey scored twice and Sammie Szmodics and Macauley Bonne were also on target, against the Ryman Premier newcomers.

All of Colchester’s goals came in the first half, as boss Humes fielded different teams in each half.

Humes said: “When you look at the quality of the goals that were scored, you want to save them for the season!

“But if they get the confidence to have the efforts on goal you can’t get enough and it was very pleasing.

“The more they do it and get into the habit of how we want to play, the better and it was a good workout for us.

“It was very competitive on a quick pitch that was a bit more difficult to the Heybridge one, last Saturday.

“They have to adjust to different types of surfaces but it was still a decent pitch to play on that allowed us to play some football.

“It was a little bit more difficult in the second half; the pitch quickened up because of the rain we had towards the end of the first half.

“Brentwood didn’t want to concede too many and get smashed, so they visibly tightened up a little bit more and got closer to us.

“But it was good for the lads who played in the second half to be a little bit more patient and do things a little bit quicker at times.”
