Colchester United manager Tony Humes believes hitting the net eight times in their opening pre-season friendly will boost his players’ confidence.

The U’s went goal crazy against Ryman League division one north side Heybridge Swifts, after scoring four goals in each half at the Texo Stadium, Scraley Road.

Chris Porter and Drey Wright both scored two apiece, while George Moncur, Macauley Bonne, Sammie Szmodics and trialist Olly Lee were also on target in the rout.

Colchester played a different side in each half, with 22 players featuring for the U's in the game.

Humes said: “The main thing is to for the players to get 45 minutes under their belt.

“Irrelevant of what else happens, you just want to see them getting that fitness and getting through it unscathed.

“In that respect, it was pleasing but the goals will give the players confidence and it’s something to build on.

“It was tough out there; it was a big pitch with hot conditions but it will all help with their fitness in the long run.

“I’m pleased with the way that they went about it and their application was good.

“They were trying to do the right things and the outcome was well worthy.

“To score eight goals will give the players massive confidence.

“The strikers are scoring goals and a few of the midfield players chipped in, as well.

“Everybody will go away from it thinking they’ve moved on a bit more now.

“That’s what we want; we want to move on to the Brentwood friendly on Tuesday night now with the same sort of approach.

“Everybody is fit and it’ll be good for them to get another 45 minutes under their belt and approach it in the same way as we did (against Heybridge).”
