David Wright says he jumped at the chance to return to Colchester United.

The former U’s midfielder is back at the Weston Homes Community Stadium as a full-time coach, working alongside under-21 coach John McGreal.

And Wright has also been appointed as manager of Maldon and Tiptree, as part of a new link-up between the U’s and the Ryman League division one north side.

The Daily Gazette understands that Wright will spearhead Colchester’s new relationship with the Jammers.

Colchester chairman Robbie Cowling is expected to take part in further meetings with Wright and Maldon chairman Ed Garty, in the coming weeks.

But the alliance could see some of Colchester’s young players representing Maldon in the Ryman League, in the forthcoming campaign.

Wright said: “I’m very excited about the opportunity and I’m really looking forward to it.

“My full-time day to day role will be working with John McGreal at Colchester United.

“And I’ll also have a part-time role as manager of Maldon and Tiptree, although I’m not sure how part-time that will be with the responsibilities that I’ll have!

“When I was a player at Colchester, I had a very good relationship with Robbie (Cowling).

“Over the last week or so, our discussions have been very open and honest.

“Robbie has a clear vision about how he wants to take it forward and develop the kids and he likes to think outside of the box.

“The four main elements are technical, tactical, psychological and physical.

“They’ve been doing that for quite a while abroad but as far as I know, not too many have done it here - I think it just shows how forward-thinking Robbie is.”
