Tony Humes admits he can understand the frustrations of Colchester United's supporters after they fell to another home defeat.

Some U's fans voiced their discontent and booed at the final whistle following the 2-0 reverse against Walsall, which was their fifth successive league defeat at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

The result leaves Colchester two points adrift of safety, in League One.

Humes said: “There’s a bit of unhappiness in the crowd which you can understand because of another home defeat.

“But I firmly believe we’re doing the right thing and that we have the players to go out and win games.

"The fans come to see us try and win a football and they support us week in, week out.

"We have to make sure that we perform and do our utmost to turn the run of home form into victories.

"That's what they come to do - they want us to see us play well but ultimately they want to see us win games.

"To a degree, I can understand their reaction but we have to keep doing what we're doing."

Colchester created numerous chances in the game, with the likes of Sammie Szmodics, Elliott Hewitt and Sanchez Watt all missing opportunities and Alex Wynter hitting the bar.

But goals from Anthony Forde and Michael Cain gave Walsall victory, leaving Humes and his players to rue their profligacy in front of goal.

“The players have to be more composed when they opportunity comes to them," added Humes.

“We’re going to keep trying to create chances and we’re not going to turn away from it.

“We have to believe that we’re doing the right things and it shows from the amount of chances that we’re creating that we’re doing that."
