Colchester United's under-21s were beaten 2-0 by in-form Swansea City in their latest Professional Development League Two game.

John McGreal took a young squad to Wales but the U's side did feature the likes of Macauley Bonne, Sammie Szmodics and Michael O'Donoghue.

Swansea went into the game on the back of an eight-match unbeaten run and took the lead after just seven minutes.

James Loveridge converted past U's goalkeeper James Bransgrove, from Modou Barrow's assist.

Bransgrove prevented Colchester from falling 2-0 down when he denied Giancarlo Gallifuoco.

But Byron Lawrence was unlucky not to equalise for the U's when his curled shot from outside of the area narrowly missed the target.

Swansea goalkeeper Oliver Davies foiled O'Donoghue in the minutes that followed half-time.

But the Swans came close to doubling their lead when Kenji Gorre hit the woodwork.

Colchester kept pushing for an equaliser and Bonne had a shot saved and his follow-up cleared off the line, while Lawrence clipped the top of the bar.

But Swansea completed their victory with five minutes remaining through substitute Henry Jones, who showed good composure to convert past Bransgrove and complete the home side's win.
