Colchester United fell to their first away defeat under Tony Humes after they were beaten 4-2 at promotion-chasing Preston North End this afternoon.

The U's played their part in an entertaining contest at Deepdale but ultimately paid the price for some sloppy defending to lose for only the second time under Humes.

Paul Gallagher squandered a great chance to score for Preston after only two minutes when he slotted wide with the goal gaping.

But Colchester took a 17th minute lead through Rhys Healey, who netted from close range after Jamie Jones had denied Alex Gilbey to score his second goal in as many games for the U's.

Preston responded well though and scored two goals in four minutes midway through the half, to turn the match on its head.

Scott Wiseman shook off Sanchez Watt’s challenge before firing a powerful shot past Sam Walker.

And Alan Browne then blasted in from inside the area, after Ben Gordon had failed to deal with a ball into the area.

However, Colchester got back on level terms eight minutes before the break through the impressive Gilbey, whose 25-yard stunner left Jones with no chance.

The sides went in level at 2-2 at the break but the second half was less than two minutes old when Colchester conceded a third.

Gallagher’s long-range shot eluded Walker and flew into the net, to restore Preston’s lead.

Garner struck the outside of a post before the hosts extended their lead just before the hour when Chris Humphrey raced onto Gallagher’s defence-splitting pass and evaded Walker before tapping in.

Substitute Callum Robinson's effort came back off the crossbar for Preston and Jones palmed over Freddie Sears' fierce effort late on, as the U's were beaten.
