He has led Colchester United with pride, over recent weeks.

But Sean Clohessy says he will have no qualms about handing the armband back to club captain Magnus Okuonghae when the time comes.

Clohessy is set to skipper the U’s again when they take on Preston North End tomorrow, as Okuonghae completes his four-match suspension.

The attacking right-back says he has enjoyed the experience of leading Colchester and helping them find their form in League One.

But the former Southend United favourite is more than happy for Okuonghae to resume his duties when he returns from his ban, next week.

Clohessy said: “Mags will be back soon and he’s obviously the main man.

“He’s a great captain and everyone can’t wait for him to come back.

“I’d never really been captain before, apart from a little spell during my time at Southend.

“I’ve enjoyed it and it’s something new, especially when you start getting on in your career.

“With all of the younger players in the team, the older players like me have had to step up and it’s been nice.

“I wouldn’t say I’m the most vocal - I just get on with what I need to do.

“There are a lot of boys who have a lot more character around the place than I have.

“But when it comes to being professional, I try and lead by example.”

Despite only being 27 years old, Clohessy has been Colchester’s senior statesman over recent games.

“I can’t believe I’m the oldest player in the team!” said Clohessy, who joined the U’s from Kilmarnock in July.

“I think it’s unheard of but with youth brings a lot of energy and creativity and that can scare anyone.

“I think our performances have been good all season.

“Before the new gaffer came in, I don’t think we got the results that our performances deserved.

“We’ve gone back to basics a bit more but we’re keeping clean sheets and still looking a threat on the counter attack, which has worked for us.

“We’re going into games now more confident that we’re going to get points, whether it’s a draw or a win.

“It’ll be tough against Preston who have got a good home record - if we can get a point or better there, it’ll be a good result.”
