Colchester United have appointed Ipswich Town legend Steve McCall as their new head scout, as new boss Tony Humes continues to reshape his backroom staff.

McCall, who left his scouting position at Portman Road in June after 13 years on Town’s staff, has taken over from Brian Owen as the U’s head of senior scouting.

As a result, former U’s player, coach and physio Owen has left his position as chief scout with immediate effect.

McCall, 53, made more than 300 appearances for Ipswich during his eight-year playing career at the Suffolk club.

The former midfielder was part of their UEFA Cup-winning team of 1981, under Sir Bobby Robson.

McCall is a former team-mate of Humes, who has now drafted in the former Plymouth Argyle boss to front his scouting team at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.
