Coca-Cola League 1

Colchester United captain Magnus Okuonghae felt the pain of defeat

By Jonathan Waldron »

Shell-shocked skipper Magnus Okuonghae described Colchester United’s defeat at ten-man Carlisle United as a “kick in the teeth”.

The U’s were beaten 2-1 at Brunton Park, having taken the lead midway through the second half through substitute Clive Platt’s goal.

Colchester conceded twice in the space of five minutes immediately after taking the lead to slide to a damaging defeat, in their on-going Coca-Cola League One promotion push.

It was a missed opportunity for the U’s, especially after promotion rivals Leeds United, Charlton Athletic and Huddersfield Town all lost their games.

Okuonghae told the Gazette: “It’s a kick in the teeth.

“Some of the other teams around us lost as well and we’re very disappointed."

I was following the game on Sky Sports, playing against 10 men in the second half was an open invitation for 3 points.

When I saw that Clive Platt had scored I celebrated by making a cup of coffee and feeding the cat and dog.

When I returned from the kitchen a few minutes later I could not believe that we had suddenly gone behind.

It was the kind of sinking feeling you get like 'Beddlington Terriers syndrome'.

As our manager points out, to concede two goals against 10 men is unacceptable.

There is a lot of talk about work rate and attitude in the modern game, but not enough is made of footballing ability.

Perhaps our team are not as good as some of us may have thought.

We need to pull ourselves together because there is a lot at stake. If we should miss out on the play offs it could have a very bad effect on the club off the field in the immediate future.

I absolutly agree with the above post. But the problem within the team is that there are some players who don't play to their top ability when they should be playing. I think most of you know the players I mean. We need motivation, maybe a trip abroad or to a premiere league club to get some ideas and style of play, which can motivate the players. What I'm getting at is, its time to change the way we play, and hopefully the change is rewarding. Up the U's

Yes I agree, to miss out on the playoffs at this stage would be a disaster. I sit with my two grandsons in the east stand week in week out, you wont believe the tears and tantrums I have to cope with when things are going bad, It would make our season if we were in the play offs and get to play at wembley in the play off final," Well I can dream cant I ?

Yes, we should play like the top teams so we score more goals. Man U and Chelsea score a lot. We should play like them I think. Clive Platt should become more like Drogba. Let's go fishing...!

Yeh I know what you mean, when you watch highlights you can tell the team have been told "When your near the goal SHOOT" - Don't tap it back and back then lose it, and then wonder why you conceded. Take chances when your up front - This is what the players should be told. A brilliant example of this is David Prutton he has a great shot on him so does Vincent but they don't shoot when they are near goal instead either pass it back or pass it to someone up front who is being marked by half a dozen men. * By the way I still think Simon Hackney should come in place of Wordsworth *

To the above comment I mean't highlights in relation to teams who score lots of goals week in week out (Premiereship sides) not colchester... but it is what colchester united should be doing.

I remember a tv programme in the eighties and they said.
If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire... The A-Team.
I wonder if they would come over and lend a hand...
