Steven Gillespie was the hero for Colchester United last night after coming off the bench to score twice and secure them a 2-1 win over Brentford.

Gillespie scored twice in the space of two minutes to help the U’s come from behind and seal a second successive win, after Niall McGinn had given the Bees the lead early in the second half.

U’s manager John Ward said: “It’s what Steven does and he’s the fox in the box.

“If he gets a chance in there, there’s a good chance he’ll hit the target.

“His first goal was a striker’s goal and he’s beaten a good goalkeeper with his second goal with a shot that moved.

“He’s got four goals in four games now and he has to be part of the squad and part of the team.

“He’s got to be prepared for the decisions that we make and my life is full of making decisions.

“I upset some and I please some and I kept the same team, because they had done extremely well at Leyton Orient.

“But it needed to change and we had some strength off the bench.”

The U’s dramatic win came in front of just 2,923, their lowest home league crowd of the season, at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

not the lowest crowd in our division on the night though. many fans put in the difficult position of a match played on valentines night!
said elsewhere on a different story, gilly should be auto pick if available, no debate in that.

Agree with the above comment. Gilly should be an auto pick. Plus two upfront too, none of this 4-5-1 rubbish.

Great second goal gilly more of them this season would be great.

Agreed, Gilly was great again. I would start him for sure.

Barry Fry once had a player (I think it was Steve Claridge) and he kept scoring as a sub. When Fry was quizzed about why he did not start him, he said that once he stops scoring as a super sub he would start him.

As strange as that may sound there is some logic in that.

Haha I see people are complaining that there wasn't a load of messages praising the game, I would have thought It was enough asking people to go to the game on valentines I don't think even the most tolerant Partner would go mental if you then started posting on the website.
I didn't think it was as bad a performance as people made out, had plenty of chances and if we were abit more clinical and had the rub of the green we could have finished the game in first 45. Was also very pleased to see us come back from behind. Much improvement on last home game, not as good as orient but after 2 weeks not too bad
