Midfielder Rowlands signs for U's

Colchester United have today completed the signing of experienced midfielder Martin Rowlands.

The 32-year-old Republic of Ireland international was released by Premier League club Queens Park Rangers by mutual consent and has joined the U's on a free transfer.

Rowlands started his career at Wycombe Wanderers but did not play a competitive game for the Chairboys.

He left to join non-league side Farnborough Town and impressed enough to attract the eye of Brentford, who he signed for in 1998.

Rowlands spent five seasons at Griffin Park, making more than 150 appearances for the Bees.

He left to join QPR in the summer of 2003 and played nearly 200 times for the west London side over nine years.

But he suffered a number of injuries during his long spell at Loftus Road, including an anterior cruciate ligament injury while playing for Republic of Ireland in October, 2009.

Rowlands' last match action came during his loan spell at Wycombe earlier this season, when he featured in the Chairboys' game against Exeter City on Boxing Day.

How is he going to help our goal scoring? Why don't we get any strikers, why always Midfielders, Wingers, and Defenders?

And why a 32 year old has been? Another bargain basement distress buy by the club. I hear that Cowling is looking to get out, on this evidence the sooner the better.

Stop whining girls. If you didn't notice we signed a striker last week who looks pretty decent. 32 year old has been? Crikey, how long do you think footballers play for these days.
Decent signing with bags of experience, a great track record. Nice little surprise!
Cowling looking to leave after investing millions in a new training ground, you've got less common sense than the local barn owls.

Maybe barn owls know more than you think after all they are deemed to be wise, move along now nothing to see here?

I don't see whyAnyone would knock him Without seeing him play. He might be 32 but he has signed a short contract.

I have never seen him play, so I cannot comment on his ability, I do look forward to seeing what he can do though.

Well done col u for this lovely suprise

Rowlands is a good player. One player cant make a good team but he will give the lads a lift. He will score a few from midfield.

Know a couple of qpr fans but neither got back to me, he has a good record, international experience, only concern is injuries but with a short contract can't fault this signing, and considering how long he's been at qpr he's got to good and had a couple of player of the year awards. I think he could be like prutton was when he got him a couple seasons back. Good luck and hopefully you can get off to a good start saturday

Good Move Mr Ward. Rowlands is a good decent player. We currently need someone with experience in the middle (apart from useless Izzet). He has a good record, and I am delighted he has chosen Col Utd. Quite surprised that he didn't go to a championship side, like Ipswich, as they have a habbit of signing old midfielders lol, but this could be a good move. Not sure if it will get us into play offs though. Bring on the 'blunt' blades - up the 'mighty' U's

Agreed. I still think that he is at least l1 standard and with out Players like Kem Izzet, then players like Wordsworth would not get forward as much. I cannot believe how many Col U fans give him a hard time and it is just because he is a defensive player.
