U's beat Orient to secure first win of 2012

Colchester United registered their first win of 2012 with an impressive 1-0 win at Leyton Orient.

An own goal by O's right-back Terrell Forbes just before the half hour mark proved the difference between the two mid-table sides, in a closely-contested affair at Brisbane Road.

Colchester received a let off in the opening minutes when Kevin Lisbie raced onto Jimmy Smith's through ball but was denied by Ben Williams.

But Lloyd James tested Orient keeper Lee Butcher with a long-range strike and the U's took the lead after 28 minutes.

After being picked out by Gavin Massey, a fine cross by Karl Duguid was converted into his own net from four yards by O's defender Forbes, under pressure from Ian Henderson.

Colchester received a let off just before half-time when Lisbie went down under pressure from Tom Eastman in the area.

But the O's appeals fell on deaf ears and the U's really should have doubled their lead in the opening stages of the second half.

Massey raced onto Anthony Wordsworth's through pass and went past Butcher, only to plant a shot onto the post and away for a goal-kick.

James came close with a dipping effort which forced Butcher to palm over over for a corner.

James almost completed Colchester's win with six minutes to go when he forced Butcher to tip over from close range, after Henderson had latched onto Magnus Okunonghae's long clearance and cleverly picked him out.

But one goal proved to be enough for the U's to collect their first win in four league matches.

Fantastic game, wasnt the prettiest but the work rate was good, could have been more, Massey looked good again.duguid had a great game to. Really good atmosphere well done everyone. Sheffield united got a bit of thumping, could see that working either for or against us.hooefully get a decent crowd, and I'm sure they will take aload

Thanks for the weather report Nora, much appreciated lets hope it doesn't snow lol.

Good win lads, JW take note of the goal scorer, you might need to sign him up as we could do with a player of he's ability :p

Lol when could do with a goal scorer like him - he was in the box to get a cross wow lol

Good result against a good team, shame we don't see that performance all the time. Thats what annoys me about Col Utd, we know they can do it, but they don't most of the time. What are the odds we will perform badly for a few games and then win the 4th. Same old story.

What struck me was the work rate of the U's fans - 662 real fans that were 100% behind the team from before kick off to long after. By contrast, the O's ranks were like a library. Per capita, I guess we are the most vocal in the country. Just a shame that whenever we are losing it fast tends to become vocally negative. Was interesting to listen to the O's fans after the game in their excellent CAMRA club/bar. No moans, no complaints (not even about the Lisbie penalty shout), just an acceptance that they were beaten by a better team on the day, and no expectations about any guaranteed promotion push. U's fans used to be like that. Am not suggesting that having ambition is wrong, but real fans temper ambition with the reality of actual revenues and hence player budgets. Was a super day out and (IMHO) many lessons to be learned. It's notable that the whingers are absent from this tread, but will no doubt return post Saturday if we don't get a result (but Sheff Utd - a point will be a bonus -and a clean sheet a miracle).

4pts from the two games against Orient is no disgrace. We were excellent box to box and I'm sure JW was delighted with the clean sheet. Bury, Carlisle & Preston losing did us no harm either. We should have had more than the scrappy one goal and we still need to be more clinical when those chances present themselves.

Sheffield Utd in third spot are next up. They usually travel well so hopefully this win and a big away side visiting Saturday should create a decent crowd and a lively atmosphere. They've lost 4 away and we've lost 4 at home so all to play for.

A good result at the weekend and looked solid at the back other than the definite penalty which the ref missed. We take good fortune wher we can get it. Work rate was tremendous from all players and needs to be a regular feature as the fans will see that the players are giving their all for the cause which is all we can ask of them - no one can complain if they play well, try hard still and lose.

Very dissappointed to read RC comments last week suggesting that fans and their negativity have led to poor home form. Fans pay to see the club and are entitled to opinions when the endeavour is blatantly not there. It should be down to players and manager to prove them wrong as they did on Saturday. If they cannot cope with critisism then they are in the wrong proffession. RC has scored a big own goal by insulting the few fans that turn up in this way!!

As on Saturday, get behind the team and hopefully they will continue to respond as they did and get a few more results to see us safe in this league next season - Up the U'S!!

Interesting that the 662 U's fans made more noise than the home fans. Just like our last home game, where the Chesterfield fans drowned out the sporadic chants from our South Stand, while as ever the West Stand was as quiet as the grave - and had a lot to be quiet about.
Let's look forward now to a good game against Sheffield United, we're sure to do better against them than against a team fighting to avoid relegation.

Shame I had to work, I had my ticket in place for this game.

From the radio commentary, Col U was a well deserved winning team. Thats great.

Eastman appeared to have a good second half which is promising.
