Jon Waldron: My views on the U's

Clinton Morrison has had a habit of poaching goals during his professional career.

So surely not even his team-mate Magnus Okuonghae would begrudge the veteran striker his maiden goal for Colchester United .

Okuonghae and Morrison were still deliberating over who scored the U’s equaliser in their 1-1 draw with Sheffield United as they made their way down the tunnel, following their post-match warm down on Saturday.

But that’s hardly surprising really, especially given that the lively Morrison is now arguably the most vocal member of the Colchester squad.

U’s manager John Ward gently admitted that he might need to “manage” the Republic of Ireland international, after bringing him to the Weston Homes Community Stadium earlier this summer.

Indeed, Ward admitted after the Blades game that the forward can be somewhat annoying at times.

But Ward will surely not mind a little irritation at times, especially if Morrison can make a habit of putting the ball in the back of the net during his time with the U’s.

Indeed, having spent 18 months pursuing the forward’s signature, it will be a small price to pay.

Having started pre-season a little later than his team-mates, it is clear that the former Crystal Palace striker is still not fully match fit.

That is something that Morrison admits himself, as is his need to adapt to the U’s system which deploys him as the pivotal striker in a fluid attacking formation.

He is something of a marked man, particularly with his reputation in the game for scoring goals.

But he is clearly relishing the fact that he has a new challenge.

And his pledge to try and score the goals to help Colchester win promotion from League One, where he says no-one at the club wants to be, is genuine.

As Morrison told me in a refreshingly honest interview at Florence Park last week, he is not at the U’s for the pay cheque.

Having scored goals in the Premier League in the past, money is clearly not the motivation for this charismatic striker.

Now there are only two simple things that float Morrison’s boat – scoring goals and winning football matches.

And if he hits the right notes for Colchester this season, the two will go hand in hand.

I watch the game sat and he was rubbish !! He could not hit a barn door ! The ball hit him on the way in ! No idea why Sears come off instead of Morrission. Colchester need to play a 4-4-2 as Morrission had no support up front

Where did you get that from (Fluid attacking formation) Mr Waldron. We have not got a formation because Ward has not got a clue what attacking football consists of. They called Morrison lazy at Shef Wed and JOHN WARD needs to get proper scouts that know a bit more regards players before signing them.

I agree with Crazy - Morrison is lazy plus he has no pace ! Its a joke playing him upfront on his own ! John Ward should play two upfront wich should be Sears and Massey. I watched the under 21 game on monday and Massey played really well and has loads of pace

For the first time I have to say that I agree with Waldron.

Oddly enough, Morrison and Kayo have both endured criticism from Colchester supporters for being completely opposite types of players.
Kay would work hard to keep the ball, run his heart out, come deep to help the team, and still he would get criticism for not scoring. Morrison gets a goal out of nothing, and hardly kicked the ball all game and still he gets criticism.

While I love players who have lots of energy (Sears and Bean look like great signings to me), some players just happen to excel in other areas. Morrison would not be my type of player, neither was Mooney, I am much more of a Gilly fan, however Morrison does not deserve criticism for scoring (with his back side or otherwise). After all, if he was to repeat this 40 times this season, would he still be a bad player????

Like his style or not Morrison will play 40+ games this season and will score 15+ goals. Lump it.

A good blog Super. I'm split on this goal scoring with Morrison. I think Clinton could get fifteen goals this season, possibly a few more if chances are created. If it stays the same as present with him up front on his own, then no. Just to put the record straight I never said he was lazy, just blogs from Shef Wed fans on their local web site. Lets all be honest and straight about this any centre forward playing up front on his own is never going to get a hatfull of goals and will strugle, not unless chances are created by creative play and attacking football. Personaly I thought J.W. was going to change tactics and pattern of play this year after I had a little chat with him on the opening day at the club.. At the moment it all seems very much the same as last season. We do have some very good players but no one in the management team seams quite able to gell them together to make them creative enough or a force when going forwards. I think we need a good tactician at the club to insall some ideas, rather than all these present coaches we have at the club now. As the saying goes to many cooks spoil the broth, and no one knows what they are doing. I know every one wants a win, but a draw tommorow would be a good result .

Hey crazy. Everyone does want to win. You are right. That is why this league is so tough. I am no manager, and even though I consider myself a die hard football fan, there has to be a difference between the two.
So with that said, I have an opinion that modern football is far less rigid than 10,20,30 years before. Just because the papers, programmer or club management label our team as 4-5-1 I don't believe that is often the case. Let's face it, full backs are now called wing backs and sweepers more often play behind the mid field than defence. It is evolution of tactics. I therefore see Henderson and sears as forwards as well as midfielders (what ever suites the team we play).
This is just my opinion. I will see our results and judge John ward, Clinton Morrison and the rest after and not before. My prediction is however that Morrison will have some success.

Please ignore the rest of my post below. **** iPhones.
