Colchester United sign striker Mooney

Colchester United have completed the signing of Reading striker David Mooney on a six-month loan deal.

The 25-year-old Dubliner has joined the U’s until January and is contention to start at Exeter City this weekend.

Mooney joined Reading in July 2008 from Cork City, having previously played for Shamrock Rovers and Longford Town in Ireland.

He has already played on loan at Stockport County, Norwich City and Charlton Athletic, where last season he made 20 league starts and scored five goals.

Indeed, Mooney scored for the Addicks in last season’s League One play-off semi-final against Swindon Town.

Colchester boss John Ward said: “I’m very pleased with the way Reading have handled it and the fact that David has been very keen to come to us.

“He’s in the mould of Steven Gillespie.

“He’s not a big striker like Kayode (Odejayi) or Clive Platt but he will lead the line.

“He’ll bring other people into play and he has a record of scoring goals.”

Robbie Cowling and John Ward have done very well to bring in a good striker at such short notice and they deserve credit for doing this. This gives us a much better chance on Saturday and for the weeks ahead.
I wish them, the U's and their fans - especially those who follow the team around the country -all the very best for the new season.Up the U's.

Well done RC and JW, for bringing in a striker we needed him. Can anyone tell me if JW likes the following players... Hackney, Vincent, Elito, Fox??? Just want to know if we will be seeing them play next season? Also is JW a long ball guy? Up the U's

Jamie Cureton has joined Exeter on non contract terms for the moment but is expexted to play against us on Saturday. The reason that has happened is because their finances at Exeter are very tight much like ourselves. What happens if he shines and scores against us? Him being a free agent means he can still be signed up by any other club.

Oh yeah I remember that now, remember having a debate with a mate of mine about how Norwich were not allowed to snap up anyone from colchester for a year or two and then they take Fox... should of taken Perkins. Well in that case no fox... what does that mean for our centre midfield?
