FA Cup draw will stir emotions, says U's boss Dunne

Joe Dunne said Colchester United's first-round tie in this season's FA Cup will stir up lots of emotions in the county - no matter who they play.

The U's will travel to play either Chelmsford City or East Thurrock United, following the draw this lunchtime.

The two non-league sides will battle it out for the right to host Colchester when they replay their fourth-qualifying round tie tomorrow night, following their 2-2 draw at Melbourne Park yesterday.

U's boss Dunne said: “Whoever we play, the interest in the game will be great.

“I’m sure they’ll be a great build-up in the weeks ahead and it really makes it interesting, which is the most important part.

“Whoever we play the ground will be packed with high emotions, both on and off the pitch and that’s all you want.”

Well remember that last FA cup game against Chelmsford City. Must be near on 44 years back.
I'm sure RB Lexden will have a record of the game whick I think we won 2 0.

It was 2-0 and I remember Ernie Adams making a great save right in front of us. We were so close to the goal at New Writtle Street that if Ernie hadn't saved it we probably would have. A good cup run could fast track fans back to WHCS and we are certainly due to have one. The damage done by Ward could be repaired quickly if we can fill the stadium with a big home draw. Having finally made the decision to sack Ward, Cowling deserves some luck as I am in no doubt that he has created an excellent infrastructure which could be the platform for some great years ahead. I am yet to see a game under Dunne and am very much looking forward to Notts County in November. As I have said before, it will take time for fans to come back as it is easy to get out of the habit and make other commitments. Let's hope that we get some luck and that the FA Cup can stir the missing thousands.

Hey guys, just hoping my beloved Clarets get there. We are still the favourites, but we've got to play a lot better than yesterday. I don't think a game of football has ever meant more to me than Tuesday's replay. City v U's is my dream tie.

Great to hear those memories of '68. Unfortunately, Melbourne Park doesn't have the capacity, or atmosphere, of our wonderful old NWS ground. Understand from previous memories expressed of this game, we were pretty unlucky not to get the draw? You hit on this break late on, with us pushing for the equaliser?

Up the City - Wheel 'em in!

But is there anybody out there who remembers the Southern League rivalry from the 40s? Nearly 17K for a non-league derby (48 I think)!

Crazy: The U's goals in that second round
FA Cup tie against Chelmsford City at New Writtle Street on January 6,1968,
were scored by Reg Stratton and Tommy McKechnie. and we then played WBA at Layer Road in the third round,a match watched
by 15,981 (correct,15,981).
At the end of that season,1967-1968,we got relegated and manager Neil Franklin was sacked and replaced by Dick Graham..For the record, when the U's played Chelmsford in the FA Cup in 1968,The Beatles were number one in the charts with Hello Goodbye, the average wage was £21 seven shillings and sixpence......a week !, (or £21,38p in modern money); the average house cost £4,344 (correct),a pint of bitter cost one shilling and tenpence(about 9p),while a gallon of petrol - yes,a gallon, not a litre - cost five shillings and tenpence halfpenny. (about 29p).

Could be a candidate for TV coverage, which would be excellent exposure for both sides and a nice bit of revenue.

Of course, there is always the risk of nationally viewed humiliation - no disrespect to Chelmsford or Thurrock, but Col U should beat them comfortably. But it´s the FA Cup, and anything can happen on the day!

Any ideas when they decide or announce the ties chosen for live coverage?
