Kayode Odejayi has admitted being crowned Colchester United’s Player of the Year came as a shock.

But the powerful U’s forward said he was both “proud and honoured” to be handed the accolade.

Colchester fans voted Odejayi as the club’s best performer, in the 2011-12 campaign.

The popular 30-year-old finished ahead of runner-up Anthony Wordsworth and third-placed Ben Williams.

He received his award at the club’s End of Season awards dinner, held at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Odejayi said: “I still haven’t got my head around it and it was a shock at the time.

“But I’m very honoured and I really appreciate the fans voting for me.

“I’ve not won anything like this before and it’s a big accolade for me, so I’m over the moon.

“I’m absolutely delighted to win the award and very proud.”

Apart from brig 1, the others above should hang their heads in shame. This was an award by the fans to the players. There for shows what you know about Colchester united and football.

Well done Kaye, and you are humble with success also.

Could never fault him for effort, much better when he got someone to play off rather than lone striker. He's never going to be a prolific scorer but him and gilly upfront for a prolonged period will score goals

agree with Angryman, he's a bit of a Heskey player, creates more than he scores. Only one player can score the goal so as long as Kay keeps creating them for Gilly, Hendo, Wordy and the rest, I'll be happy and we'll do well
