A late equaliser from Tom Eastman helped Colchester United secure a point in a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth this afternoon.

Eastman turned in substitute Michael Rose's low cross following a short corner with seven minutes to go at Dean Court, to secure the U's their ninth draw in 11 matches in League One.

Andrew Bond rattled the woodwork in the opening stages for Colchester, while Brian Wilson saw his long-range shot tipped over by Cherries goalkeeper, Darryl Flahavan.

But the U's fell behind a minute later in controversial circumstances when Shaun MacDonald rounded goalkeeper Mark Cousins, who started his first game in more than seven months, and slotted in.

Colchester were incensed as they felt Wes Thomas was in an offside position in the build-up to the goal but referee Stuart Atwell allowed it to stand.

Colchester responded well to the setback and goalscorer MacDonald was forced to clear Anthony Wordsworth's effort off the line.

But Scott Malone's effort was cleared off the line minutes after the break and Cousins pushed away Wes Thomas's drive, as the Cherries started the second half well.

Kayode Odejayi was sent on for skipper Kem Izzet just after the hour in a bid to carve out more attacking opportunities for the U's.

But Charlie Daniels almost put the game beyond them with 16 minutes to go when he drilled a low shot wide of the far post, from Malone's clever pass.

Rose tested Flahavan's agility with a long-range effort as the clock ticked down.

But Colchester finally got back on level terms with seven minutes to go when Rose's drilled low cross was turned in by Eastman in a crowded area, to secure another 1-1 draw.

Decent point.

However, the following list of goals scored since our victory at Charlton explains in very graphic terms what needs to be addressed next season.

The performance again today was poor in respect they were clueless in tactics and direction. Bournmouth much like ourselves lost a good manager plus most of their star players. I'm sorry but certain players again today failed to show me that matches can be won if you show a bit more fight for the ball. We should have won easily today. One player today that will surprise a few people and is excempt was Rose. He could have been trying to prove something but least it does prove if you get all your players motivated and a fight for the ball you will get results. Woody for example has the flair and ability but any good manager will see he does not show enough aggresion in his play and far to laid back at times like today. We have some good players in the team but they need to be knitted together to play as a unit. It upsets me because we could have a very successfull team very easily if we had a good manager which John Ward is not and never will be.

A masterly exposition of our team's problem.

Couple of strikers that can score goals. Does,nt matter where they come from lower division or lower league. Never mind helping out old mates to give their no hopers a bit of experience.Parkey found what was needed and got the best out of them. Dick Graham ,Jim Smith and Bobby Roberts all managed it the same. Why can,nt this lot?

Jim Smith pulled off a masterstroke by bringing Svarc and Froggatt to Layer Road. They were already a proven strike force in the true sense.

I was in the Boston Board Room a few years ago and there is a team picture on the wall that has Smith, Froggatt and Svarc together. The good folk from Lincolnshire loved to hear how their three former stars had made such an impact at Colchester.

Froggatt and Svarc 5
Grimsby Town 0

That match was on a Friday night and it was one of the greatest examples of twin strikers working together that I have ever seen in the club colours.

Chester 0
Svarc 4

( Chester or Stockport? ).

Colchester fans took these two players to their hearts.

Bobby travelled down from Blackburn to help me out a few years ago.

Very happy memories indeed.

I also recall an away cup match at Watford when John Froggatt did a Svarc like turn in the box and won the game with a late winner.

Sparks, Graham Smith used to take our training sessions twice a week, I remember talking about the way that Bobby Svarc would catch the ball on his chest with his back to goal, turn, drop the ball and hit it on the volley, it turned out that Svarc'y was pidgeon chested and could hold the ball in place with his chin, defenders stood no chance of winning the ball.
Do you remember when Jim Smith was appointed manager?,everyone asked Who? he came as a player manager, the Wednesday after he signed i went to watch the reserves and Jim played, proper little mid-field dynamo, but the scuffiest untidy little sod I've ever seen.
Great Days.

Ah, Jim Smith, I agree that he was unknown to most of us, but he truly left his mark on Colchester United.

He turned out to be a great appointment!

I too remember him scurrying around in the Layer Road mud a few times in those shorts.

This all leads nicely onto Bobby Roberts who did another fine job a few years later.

Around this time Jimmy Lindsay ( who joined from Watford ) hit a real purple patch in midfield. He would link everything together in that special way that very few players accomplish.

Kevin Watson did it in our promotion season, Kevin made it look so simple, but it made such a difference to everyone playing around him.
