Cherries interested in signing U's ace Wordsworth

Colchester United have received firm interest from League One rivals AFC Bournemouth for Anthony Wordsworth.

The Gazette understands that the Cherries have made an approach to the U’s for the talented midfielder.

There has been contact between the two clubs but it is understood that a deal is far from imminent at this stage.

Wordsworth, 23, is Colchester’s leading goalscorer this season with nine goals.

He has been one of the U’s most consistent performers and has flourished in an advanced central midfield role.

Wordsworth, who emerged through the youth ranks at the U’s, signed a new deal last January.

He still has 18 months remaining on his existing contract and Colchester are likely to be reluctant to sell one of their key players to one of their League One rivals.

Speaking earlier this month, U’s boss John Ward said he would like to keep Wordsworth.

Ward said: “At some stage Anthony will move on and I’d like him to move on with us, if he can.

“He has another 18 months on his contract and I’ve had that conversation with him.

“I want him to push on with us but if that doesn’t happen, I’ll have to deal with it.

“He likes it here but like anyone he has ambition to improve and so he should have.”

I think Lee Bradbury will manage him better and a move will be beneficial to his career.

But I'm guessing $$$ may be key!

If we must lose Anthony Wordsworth I would prefer he bided his time and took his skills to a higher profile club. Bournemouth have a bigger fan base, and would place Wordy in a much bigger shop window. perhaps he could use this move as a stepping stone to bigger and better things. Whatever he decides I wish him all the best.

Bournemouth seem to me a club which has a lot of fight in them, and ambition. He will improve if he moved to a team with those attributes so all the best to whatever you decide.

No offence, but I would like to think that Wordy would have his sights set a little higher than Bournemouth. He has proved this season that he's more than capable in this division. I would have thought a champoinship move is not far away. In the current financial situation and with so many others out of contract though
, the decision will come down to money. With 18 months left on his contract, there has to be something decent coming back the other way if he does move on.

sorry this is one of the funniest things I have read for a while, he will never play for a top Premier club, he has no turn of speed, he has no engine, no tricks or skills, apart from set plays and will only be a Championship player at best!

I honestly can only see this move as a non starter. I cannot see why he would go from occasional penalty taker and first choice free kick taker, with a permanent first team spot at Col U, and swap that for potentially being 2nd choice at every thing in Bournemouth with players already engineering those positions and free kicks within the squad. It is his choice, but if he stays he would surely attract a better championship side or L1 top 5 club.

Baldwin goes on a free! would have him over Heath and Eastman after the last game, let's not hope magnus stays. Good luck pat, shame to see you go, and shame to see you messed about over past couple of seasons

Col U players who stay have been told they will have to take a pay cut because of the new rules. Why should Woody stay? Bournemouth have double the crowds, so they should be able to pay their players better. They are more likely to make the Championship soon than we are. And Bournemouth could be a better shop window for him to display his talents, which we have known since he first came on as a sub in a Championship match at Layer Road.
A shame to see him go, but good luck to him, he has to look to his career.
.
As for Pat, a shame to see him go too, but again why stay at a club where pay is going to be cut? He knows the Southend set-up, so he will have worked out his chances of getting regular first-team action there, and we shall no doubt see him playing for them against us next season.

so much for the new training facilities being a draw to players.what is the rule that means a cut in wages.maybe we should be told.

Knowing Col Utd, they will sell him for hardly anything. At the rate clubs are selling players, and pricing them we should ideally get at least 1-2million for him. But, you watch Col Utd will end up selling him for a few 100 thousand and then complain about having no money!!!! Same old Col Utd.
P.s Great result again, I actually thought we would be beaten, but sounds like a good all round performance, would like to see Odejayi and Massey play up front together. Would be a great combination, with pace and strength. What are the odds that we will now lose 2 games in a row - same old story

There has been lots of stuff in the papers about new Football League restrictions. A club will only be allowed to pay wages in proportion to its gate receipts. See for example:

jun/10/football-leag

This means either fewer players or lower wages or both. Hence Robbie Cowling's pronouncement to the BBC.
