Late Thirwell goal prevents Colchester United from going top

Colchester United conceded another late goal to draw 1-1 with Carlisle United at the Weston Homes Community Stadium this evening.

It had looked as though David Mooney's header from Brian Wilson's accurate cross just before the half hour mark would be enough to give manager John Ward victory over his former club and his first home win as U's boss.

But Paul Thirwell swept home from Gary Madine's low cross in the third minute of stoppage-time to prevent Colchester from going top of npower League One.

Mooney gave the U's the lead and Carlisle goalkeeper Adam Collin foiled Anthony Wordsworth just before half-time, as the home side dominated.

But Carlisle were much improved in the second half.

Colchester goalkeeper Mark Cousins saved well from Madine and Francoise Zoko was unlucky to see his acrobatic effort come back off the crossbar, as the U's lived dangerously at times.

And Thirwell made Carlisle's pressure count in the closing stages to prevent Colchester from securing three points.
