Late Thirwell goal prevents Colchester United from going top

Colchester United conceded another late goal to draw 1-1 with Carlisle United at the Weston Homes Community Stadium this evening.

It had looked as though David Mooney's header from Brian Wilson's accurate cross just before the half hour mark would be enough to give manager John Ward victory over his former club and his first home win as U's boss.

But Paul Thirwell swept home from Gary Madine's low cross in the third minute of stoppage-time to prevent Colchester from going top of npower League One.

Mooney gave the U's the lead and Carlisle goalkeeper Adam Collin foiled Anthony Wordsworth just before half-time, as the home side dominated.

But Carlisle were much improved in the second half.

Colchester goalkeeper Mark Cousins saved well from Madine and Francoise Zoko was unlucky to see his acrobatic effort come back off the crossbar, as the U's lived dangerously at times.

And Thirwell made Carlisle's pressure count in the closing stages to prevent Colchester from securing three points.

What a disappointing result! Again! Yet again we left the WHCS really saddened at the result, it felt almost like a defeat rather than a draw. We always do it, hold on until the last minute of the game, then lose our concentration and concede a late goal. When will we learn? Until then, I am afraid, despite playing entertaining football, we only remain a mid-table side. Up the U's!

The first half was what us U's fans are looking for, great passing football, energy and a goal! That was the best football I have seen at home since we have been in the new stadium, we just have to realise we have to attack and not hold out for draws......we sat back and it was just a matter of time before they equalised....but much better than teams put out by Lambert and Boothroyd.
Pity there was under 4,500 there but if you keep playing like the first half I am sure more will come. Up the U's!

From my point of view very dissapointing game. I was fully aware we had the midweek game but we just run out of steam in the second half. Mooney again shone in the first half but then in the second period lacked pace or stamina and like several of the players looked second best to getting the ball first. Carlisle showed the itensity and fitness levels that you need in football these days to win games. They closed us down very quickly and in the second half read our game and started to lift high lofted balls in from the wings which at times we strugled with. We have heard John Ward say that we have a plan two not just one but so far I have only seen one plan. I did expect to see some wide wingers being used this year so was highly dissapointed not to see Vincent brought on instead of Wordsworth. This player Woody still frustrates me and does not show the kind of aggression that one needs in todays football. Does a lot of running around yet still has not got that killer instinct in front of goal by getting in and mixing it amongst the opposition players in the goal mouth. In the warm up before the game a lot of the U's players seemed to be taking it very lightly and not looking that serious laughing and joking which was the exact opposite to the Carlisle players. Also Im still not a lover of managers being nice. John Ward praised his players after the game but another one instead would have given them a right old bolicking for conceeding a late goal. Players then dont concern them selves so much if they know they can play badly and get away with it. Dick Graham never suffered fools lightly nor does Roy Keane it seams. Down here in hythe Nr Southampton where i now live they have up to 200 people or more airing their views on any topic and they certainly dont mince their words down here if things are going wrong. I have watched Bournmouth, Southampton,Brighton all play at home this season and I can tell you all those teams play very good football and will be hard to beat this season. I think we will be okay this year but a top striker was the most important thing we never signed and will be our biggest mistake in not doing. P.S. Whats happened to Gillespie? I dont hear the news whats going on. Is he injured again? Someone let me know please. Hope all you lads are ok and keeping well. Please please bring loads of supporters down in a few weeks time to cheer the U's on.

Steven Gillespie is still out with the ankle he twisted in pre-season.
