Promotion-winning skipper Richard Wilkins believes mental strength can make or break Colchester United’s promotion hopes.

Wilkins knows what it takes to taste glory with the U’s, having led them to victory in the division three play-off final at Wembley, in 1998.

The 44-year-old was crowned Colchester’s player-of-the-year that season, which culminated in their glorious 1-0 triumph over Torquay United.

Wilkins was a key figure in helping the U’s bag ten wins from their final 15 league games to eventually seal promotion to division two.

Colchester are now hoping to overcome a recent wobble to secure their place in this season’s Coca-Cola League One play-offs.

And former U’s favourite Wilkins - who played more than 300 league and cup games in two spells at the club - believes it is now a time for cool heads and strong minds.

Wilkins told the Gazette: “Now is the time when you earn your corn as a player.

“There will be lots of twists and turns and they are fine lines.

“Your preparation has to be spot on, if there’s a chance of you gaining an extra per cent.

“Mentally, you should focus on every game as if it’s your last one.

“It’s an immensely draining experience.

“You need heroes and someone to step up and score that goal when it’s needed.

“You have bad periods and you have to be 100 per cent focused on the next game.”
