A goal on his Southend United debut was a shock for Colchester United's Pat Baldwin

PAT Baldwin was as surprised as anyone by his last-gasp equaliser on his Southend United debut against Swindon Town on Saturday.

For not only had the on-loan Colchester defender previously scored just once in 229 games, but he also knew very little about the goal which secured a 2-2 draw for the Shrimpers at Roots Hall.

“I felt it hit my head but I didn’t see it cross the line so it was all quite confusing,” said Baldwin, who along with striker Scott Vernon has joined on loan until the end of the season from the U’s.

“I don’t get many goals though and my only other one actually came against Southend, so it was nice to score for the club as well especially on my debut.”

Well done Pat, I am still confused by it all.....to me you should be playing in the U's defence....but you did stop Swindon going above us, well done to you and I hope you are back with us next season or maybe sooner.
The thing we lack is six or seven goals from our centre backs over the course of the season!!

A cult figure for Saffend already. Well done Pat, true professional perfomance by you and Scott on Saturday by all accounts.

After a shaky start by all of the Southend team he never gave Painter a look in. Won all the balls in the air . At least he stopped Swindon all getting three points. I still think its a mistake to let him go but lets give the others U's players the chance to shine.

I'm also so pleased that Pat got off to such a good start with the Shrimpers. It's a good job he and Scotty are not allowed to play against us next week. By the end of the season we may be begging him to come back. Stranger things than that have happened.
