Luke Prosser is remaining philosophical about whether or not he will still be at Colchester United next season.

The U’s club captain will see his current contract at the Weston Homes Community Stadium expire at the end of the campaign.

Prosser has been impressive since returning from a 14-month injury lay-off, in January and head coach John McGreal is believed to be keen to keep the experienced defender at the League Two outfit.

McGreal revealed last week that Colchester have begun talking to some of the players who are due to see their present deals expire, this summer.

Prosser says he is enjoying his time at Colchester – but the 29-year-old is nevertheless remaining tight-lipped on whether or not he will extend his stay.

Prosser said: “I enjoy it here and I enjoy being club captain.

“I’d like to have been on my 80th or 90th game for Colchester by now all being well but it hasn’t been the case.

“What will be, will be and we’ll see what happens.”

Prosser has been a mainstay of the Colchester defence over the last three months, having sat out the first-half of the campaign due to a long-term knee injury.

He has been a regular starter alongside Tom Eastman at the heart of the U’s back four and says he is enjoying making up for lost time.

“I’m desperate for the season to carry on,” said the former Southend United defender.

“I’m just happy to be out there doing what I can, to help the boys win games.

“It’s been a long time and every minute you get out there, you cherish because I’ve been on the other end and sitting there watching 14 months’ worth of football.”

Colchester are now gearing up for a third successive season in League Two, after their faint play-off hopes were finally extinguished last weekend following a 2-1 defeat at promotion-chasing Lincoln City.

Courtney Senior and Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe both came on as second-half substitutes in the reverse at Sincil Bank and defender Prosser things the young U’s duo have lots of potential.

Prosser added: “The likes of Courtney (Senior) and Junior (Ogedi-Uzokwe) have got such ability and have bright futures ahead of them.

“The more game time they can get, the more they can push on and get into the first team.”
