Former Colchester United boss Geraint Williams is expected to assist caretaker manager Bryan Klug with Ipswich Town first-team duties for the remaining four games of the Championship season.

Klug has been placed in temporary charge at Town until the end of the current campaign, after Mick McCarthy announced he would be leaving Portman Road following their 1-0 win over Barnsley last night.

It had been confirmed last month that McCarthy would be leaving his role as Ipswich manager by mutual consent, at the end of the season.

But McCarthy, along with his assistant Terry Connor, have left earlier than expected and former U's boss Williams, who is currently working within the academy at Ipswich, is understood to be stepping up to first-team duties and assist Klug.

The former Wales under-21 boss led Colchester to their highest-ever finish in 2007, steering them to tenth spot in his first season in charge after taking over from Phil Parkinson.

Williams spent more than two years in the managerial hot seat at Colchester, before leaving the role in September, 2008.

Klug's first game in temporary charge will be Town's trip to play Nottingham Forest, on Saturday.

Klug worked as assistant to manager Jim Magilton between 2006 and 2008 before overseeing the development of players and coaches at the Academy.

He left to work within Tottenham Hotspur's academy but returned to Blues in 2012.
