Drey Wright insists Colchester United can still embark on a winning run in the remaining weeks of the season – and clinch an unlikely play-off place.

The U’s remain four points adrift of the top-seven places in League Two, despite falling to a narrow 1-0 loss at home to leaders Accrington Stanley.

John McGreal’s side have four games left to close ground on the teams immediately above them in the table – and attacker Wright says that is still possible.

Wright said: “We’ll try and win each and every one of our last four games – there’s no reason why we can’t do that.

“Last year, we were bottom of the league and we went on a winning run of nine or ten games so it can happen.

“After the Yeovil defeat last month, it looked like it was a real long shot but we pulled ourselves into a position where it’s a possibility.

“We do seem to get really close and then kind of fall away but we’re still in the same position as we were before the Accrington game, just with a game fewer to make up the ground.

“We’ll go into every game trying to close that gap.

“We’ve picked up the performances and hit a good bit of form, at the right time.

“That’s ten points from 15 now and we’ll try and win every game.

“We’ll see where we end up after the Notts County game, on Saturday.

“We put in a good performance against them earlier in the year but didn’t get the result, so we’ll be looking to try and do that again and get the win.”

Colchester’s four-match unbeaten run was ended after Billy Kee’s 63rd-minute winner gave Accrington victory, in a tight contest.

“It was a disappointing blow for us,” said Wright, who twice came close to scoring for Colchester.

“It was always going to be a close game and it was a tight margin.

“They got a very fortunate goal against the run of play, midway through the second half which I think we dominated.

“It was a bit cagey in the first half – neither team created that many chances but we knew what we had to do in the second half and that was go for the points.

“We had to go for it after they scored and they caught us on the break a few times.

“Sam (Walker) made some brilliant saves as he has done all season to keep us in the game.

“Over the last few games, it feels like we’ve had our chances and we’ve taken them which we lacked, halfway through the season.

“But it didn’t work out for us against Accrington.

“Accrington’s points return this year alone is outstanding and they just seem to have that way of just nicking points, where it matters.

“They scored a fortunate goal but if you do it every week, it can’t be that lucky.

“They’ve very confident at the moment – they know that if it’s happened before, they can get that one chance and then see out the game."
