Colchester United’s match-winner Ben Stevenson says they have discovered their momentum at the right time in League Two.

Stevenson struck the U’s winning goal in their 2-1 triumph at Forest Green Rovers yesterday to secure their third straight win.

John McGreal’s side have closed to within four points of the top seven, following their victory at the New Lawn.

And now they are one of the form teams in the division, midfielder Stevenson says they feel confident.

Stevenson said: “It’s a great time to have momentum.

"We feel we can win every game that we play and that’s what we have to keep doing.

“We’re looking forward to the last five games.

“We had a few defeats but I think the way we reacted to that has been really good.

“We had been playing well but not had that clinical edge but now it looks like we have and it’s a good time to have it, going into the end of the season.

“There’s no fear and the confidence is flowing.

“We’re taking every game at a time trying to win games and we’re putting ourselves in the best position we can and see what happens.”

Stevenson struck his third Colchester goal with a delightful strike at Forest Green.

The on-loan Wolves midfielder latched onto Mikael Mandron’s pass before drilling a precise low shot into the corner, less than two minutes after half-time.

The former Coventry City midfielder said: “I took a touch and I had a bit more space than I thought.

“I seem to get closer and closer and I just thought that I’d have a shot.

“As soon as I hit, I didn’t think it was going in but it came back inside and went into the bottom corner.

“I was happy with my goal and I’ve always wanted goals in my game.

“The goals have been coming - the two goals against Luton came from the centre-backs so it was about time some of the attacking players got in the act and two of us got goals.”

Stevenson was quick to praise Colchester’s travelling support at Forest Green, after made the long trip from Essex.

Nearly 350 U’s fans travelled to see their team’s victory.

The 21-year-old added: “I want to give credit to the fans who come up.

“They kept us going until the end, helping us with every challenge and it was the same against Luton Town at home on Good Friday.”
