Colchester United match-winner Sean Murray believes their triumph at Yeovil Town can pave the way for more positive results after the U’s finally broke their away duck.

Murray netted the first-half winner for John McGreal’s side in their 1-0 triumph at Huish Park, their first away victory of the League Two campaign.

It was Colchester’s first win in five matches and also their first clean sheet of the season and ahead of three successive home games, midfielder Murray says they are looking up.

Murray said: “It’s good to get the away win and we can now only move forward.

“The away win had been coming and I think we saw that in spells at Grimsby.

“To pick up that point was a positive and I think we took that into the Yeovil game with the win.

“I think it’s more of a defensive result that we got because we got the clean sheet and the goal that we needed to, so we’re very happy.

“It was strange because normally if you’re 1-0 up, you can expect a lot of pressure on you in the second half but I think we kept our shape quite well.

“Players knew where they had to be and they didn’t cause us too much trouble.

“We also created a few chances and with one or two different touches, we could have scored more goals.”

Murray’s fine strike, the culmination of an impressive team move, was his first goal for Colchester since joining them from Swindon Town, in January 2017.

It was also the first time he has netted in more than a year and the former Watford midfielder is hoping more goals will now follow. He said: “I’m happy with my goal – it’s been a long time in coming but it’s good to get off the mark at this time of the season when goals are needed.

“It’s great for me but I thought it was a good team goal as well.

“There were quite a few players involved in it and it shows the kind of football that we like to play.”

Murray is hoping to keep his place in Colchester’s side for their Checkatrade Trophy group match with Gillingham tomorrow night, after being recalled to their starting line-up for the first time since September 2.

He said: “There’s a lot of competition for places now and we have a really good squad.

“People want to perform in that as well to get a place in the team which is great and what we need.”
