KANE Vincent-Young is targetting more first-team action for Colchester United.

The young full-back was handed a starting spot in Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Luton Town.

And despite the disappointing result, he was one of the team's brighter performers, going close with shots in either half at Kenilworth Road.

Now the 21-year-old is setting his sights on more involvement and would love to keep his place for Saturday's home match against Forest Green Rovers.

“It’s any player’s aim to be starting regularly and it’s certainly mine," he said.

“I didn’t play a massive part last season but this year I want to be much more involved.

“I love playing at wing-back.

“It’s a good balance of attacking and defending.

“It’s more the offensive side of it because you start higher up which suits me and hopefully I can help the team from there.

“In terms of our team, it’s very competitive at the minute and we’re strong in every position.

“That’s good, because it means we’re pushing each other to put in good performances and, in turn, help the team."

Vincent-Young progressed through the Academy at Tottenham Hotspur but was released in 2014.

He joined Colchester's Academy for the 2014-15 season and made his professional debut for the club in August 2015.

He made regular first-team appearances last season, playing 18 times in League Two and making a further five appearances in cup competitions, and he signed a one-year contract extension with the club in late June.

“It was good to get the contract sorted and not have any worries about that," he added.

“As a youngster especially, you don’t want to have any worries like that so I know now that’s it all sorted and I can go out and enjoy the games."

Colchester have made a disappointing start to the new season, with just one point from their opening three matches.

That came at home to Stevenage but was sandwiched by defeats at Accrington Stanley and then Luton, on Saturday.

Nevertheless, Vincent-Young is hopeful the club's form will improve.

“We went very close last year and were very disappointed not to make it further," he said.

"But we have another chance now and hopefully come May, we’ll be celebrating."
