Alex Wynter has quit Colchester United - prompting speculation they may be about to move for another defender.

The 23-year-old centre-back has had his contract with the U's cancelled by mutual consent, on the eve of the new League Two season.

And he has wasted no time in finding new employers, signing for Maidstone United ahead of the new 2017-18 campaign.

Colchester head coach John McGreal has said they might be in the market for a new signing but could have to allow someone to leave, in order to bring in reinforcements.

Wynter made more than 50 league appearances for Colchester, having joined them permanently from Crystal Palace in January 2015 after previously spending time on loan with the U's in the 2013-14 season.

U's director of football Tony Humes told the club's website: "Alex is a player who needs regular first team football and he hadn't had that opportunity here.

"All parties felt it was right that he had a chance to find a new club and this is a good opportunity for him. We wish him well in the next stage of his career."
