John Terry is in line to make his first away appearance as an Aston Villa player at the Weston Homes Community Stadium next month.

Villa owner Tony Xia confirmed on social media this morning that the former Chelsea and England defender has penned a one-year deal with the Championship club and could feature for Steve Bruce’s side when they take on Colchester United in their televised Carabao Cup first-round tie, on August 9.

Former England captain Terry won five Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups and featuring in Champions League and Europa League-winning campaigns, during his 19 seasons at Stamford Bridge.

And with their trip to Colchester their first game of the season away from Villa Park this season, the 36-year-old could be in line to feature against the U’s.

Colchester head coach John McGreal says his side’s meeting with Villa is one to look forward to.

McGreal told the Daily Gazette: “It’s a great game for us and a great game for the fans and hopefully they will all turn out in their numbers.

“Aston Villa were number one seeds going into the draw and it’s going to be a really tough game for us with the amount of quality that they’ve got within their team.

“We all know about Villa’s history and Steve (Bruce) has got a good job there to try and get them towards where they want to go, we’ll know what potential they’ve got in the Championship when they come and play us in their second game of the season.

“The good thing is that we’re at home where we were good last season so we’re hoping to continue that with Villa and then the Stevenage game.”
