Colchester United missed out on making the League Two play-offs in heartbreaking fashion despite beating Yeovil Town 2-0 this afternoon, on the final day of the season.

The U's had to win and hope other results elsewhere went that way and for a long time, it looked like that scenario would happen.

But Carlisle United came back to beat Exeter City 3-2 to claim seventh place over the U's and leave them disappointed.

Tarqiue Fosu scored twice as Colchester finished the season on a winning note in front of a crowd of 6,565, their second highest home attendance of the season.

Colchester head coach John McGreal named an unchanged side for their must-win game against Yeovil Town.

There was a change among the substitutes though, with Cameron James replacing Kane Vincent-Young on the bench after recovering from a hamstring strain.

Yeovil went close in the opening minutes.

Ben Whitefield did brilliantly to whip the ball back for Otis Khan who curled a first-time shot over.

But Colchester warmed to the task after that and went close when Drey Wright collected Tom Lapslie's pass and dragged a low shot wide after a patient build-up.

Matt Briggs was heavily involved in the first half and almost scored when he leapt to meet Richard Brindley’s free-kick at the far post but headed wide from six yards, with the goal gaping.

Briggs then sent a header from Brindley’s free-kick straight at keeper John Maddison before the former Fulham player advanced towards goal ends in a left-foot shot that flashed wide of the post.

Colchester made the breakthrough they were looking for in the 36th minute.

Tarique Fosu picked up possession midway inside Yeovil half and drilled a fine low shot into the bottom corner for his second goal in as many games.

It was almost 2-0 barely a minute later when Wright's ball to the far post saw Briggs drag a low shot past the far post and the U’s went in at the break ahead.

Colchester squandered a great chance to doubled their lead early in the second half when Wright blasted over the bar with only Maddison to beat after Fosu's pass had sent him through on goal.

Brindley's 30-yard free-kick flew just over just before the hour for the U's, as they went in search of a second goal.

As news of Colchester's play-off rivals' fortunes came through elsewhere, the hosts kept going and they doubled their lead with 13 minutes remaining through Fosu, who coolly slotted home after Tom Eastman had capitalised on a Yeovil mix-up to pick him out.

But there was a hush around the ground seconds later, after news came through of Carlisle United taking a 3-2 lead at Exeter City and moving back into the play-off places, as it stood.

And although Colchester comfortably saw out victory, results elsewhere meant that narrowly missed out on a coveted play-off place despite a superb effort.
