Two-goal hero Chris Porter was the toast of Colchester United – after jetting back from a wedding to help them renew their League Two play-off vows.

Porter was given the day off training the day before the U’s took on Luton Town, after flying up to Scotland to see his future sister-in-law get married.

The 33-year-old striker cut short his celebrations to travel back for Colchester’s clash with the promotion-chasing Hatters.

Skipper Porter proved their best man after his first-half brace helped them claim an impressive 2-1 win and boost their hopes of a top-seven finish.

Porter said: “It was a bit unusual preparation.

“The wedding was up in Scotland and I flew back on Friday evening, so I was only there for half of it unfortunately.

“It was nice to be there and the bride will be my sister in a couple of months’ time when I get married to my partner so I was delighted the manager gave me the day off.

“When she told me it was on the Friday I was like: ‘What are you doing choosing a Friday!?’’”

“But it’s one of those things and I made sure I prepared right all week to make sure I wasn’t on my feet a lot.

“There was obviously no drinking, even though I would have liked to.

“It was great to be there but obviously football is the main thing and I came back and did the business.”

Porter is now Colchester’s leading scorer with 13 goals after he found the net for the first time in six games against Luton.

He said: “I was getting a bit worried and on a bit of a goal drought so I’m delighted with the two goals.

“The first goal went over quite a few bodies and I only saw it late, so I was really pleased with that one.

“For the second one, I got across the front which is what the manager has been asking us to do, so I’m sure he’ll be delighted with that one.”

Porter felt he might have had the opportunity to complete a hat-trick in the second half had he not been fouled by Luton defender Scott Cuthbert in the area.

Referee Gavin Ward waved away Porter’s penalty appeals, much to the striker’s frustration.

Porter added: “I might have had a hat-trick if the referee had put his glasses on – I think everyone in the stadium knew it was a penalty!

“I couldn’t really shoot because he’d pulled my body the other way so I thought it was a blatant penalty, to be honest.

“I don’t think I’m allowed to say what I said to the referee and I was quite angry at the time.

“But he saw something different to what everyone else saw, so it’s one of those things.”
